Keep V1/V2 or go Dimarzio?

Hey there Jemsiters!

Wanted to ask everyone's opinion about my pickup dilema.

Situation:
-I live in Japan. I was lucky to get a very rare 1987 RG 540 in Road Flare Red (540's were only available in Japan, they are the S/S/H version of the 550, this color also is kind of a mystery since RFR wasn't available with 87 RG's...).
- Everything on this guitar is stock, and the one curious thing is that it is at least 5 pounds heavier than my other 550's. I have heard some of the early production run 550's were built with mahogany wood, so this might be the case as I can't find any other explaination for the heaviness.

- The dilema: I just finished recording my album demo, and I am set to start making the actual album from next week. So... wanting the best sound possible, do I:

A: Keep the already good sounding stock v1 and v2 pickups in the guitar, OR
B: Would going with an upgrade Tone Zone or some sort of Dimarzio get an even better sound ??

- This RF 540 is the best sounding of all my 80's RG's ( I have 6 of them ), it has a very clean, resonant, thick tone that stands out very clearly. So I am wondering if replacing the pickups is ALWAYS a good idea with any stock pickup, or ... is this really a case by case thing, and is it not necessarlily always better idea to replace stock pickups in RG's???

Thanks!

I'd go this route before a swap:

If you like the tone you're getting keep them. If not, I would put something else in that you like ... tone zone, gravity storm, or whatever you like. I would set aside the original pickups so you could put the guitar back to original some day if you wanted to instead of taking them apart and modifying them. The link above was modification for V7/V8 pickups which i don't think sound as good as the V1/V2. I'm not sure how the V1/V2 would sound if you made this mod.

personally i like the v1/v2 combo...if anything i would recommend having a different pickguard made with the dimarzios and keeping the v pickups in case you want to switch back to them...d.m.

The idea was to try different magnets. This thread discusses V1/V2 magnets specifically:

I would also like to add that it depends on how you are recording your guitar. If you are using a tube amplifier then I think the pickup upgrade would be worth it. If you are using amp software and/or digital gear (e.g. Pod) to record then the pickup upgrade won't be as noticeable, imho.

Re: Keep V1/V2 or go Dimarzio?

I'm a bit confused by what you're after here. You've mentioned that this guitar is your best sounding guitar. If you are really happy with the tone of the guitar then there's not really any point changing it.

In saying that, if there is something more you want from the guitar, you need to decide what it is you're after (more/less output, more low end, mids, highs, etc, more dynamics, etc) and then some pickup options may be able to be thrown out there.

But don't forget that you have other options too. If you generally like the tone of the guitar as is, you may be able to achieve subtle positive tweaks, just by adjusting the height of the pickup, or even just the pole piece heights too.

In short, don't just change pickups because you feel you have to get rid of the stock ones. If they do exactly what you want, or very close to, and you can adjust the stock ones to get even closer to your perfect sound, then stick with the stock pickups.
