Knopfler 7 String

I've ordered an rg1527 with a seymour duncan 59 neck and jb bridge. Listening to Dire Straits' "Down to the waterline" right now and I was wondering whether you guys think I'll be able to get a similar tone to Mr Knopfler when the humbuckers are parallel connected?

Just wondering :P

Re: Knoplfer 7 String

You'll get a decent tone, but it's essential to use your fingers to nail his sound!

Re: Knopfler 7 String

You might want to get a coil tap added to your tone pot as well, to split the coils. Mark uses single coil pickups for the most part.

+1 - split those coils and use a very bare-bones low output sound. For a lot of his part, he's using very little gearwise and most of it is from his fingers...them's magic fingers

Re: Knopfler 7 String

A lot of Knopfler's sound (think Money for Nothing here) was actually a wah pedal sitting at a particular sweet spot on it's sweep - oh, yeah, and two Soldano Heads as well!

He is, yep, a stunningly good player!

Re: Knopfler 7 String

Didnt know that, ill have to try it.
Some of Dire Straits songs are so good its unreal. Love over gold, Your latest trick, Romeo and juliet and Lady writer are just incredible.
Totally underated band as i think Knopfler gets alot of the recognition, and rightly so. But the rest of the band(s) are also spot on.

Oh and in answer to the first post, only a real Strat will do as far as im concerned, an RG1527 doesnt come close, and i know cos i own both.

..... you are aware that Mark has been playing a Gibson '59 Les Paul reissue for quite a few years now.........?

Re: Knopfler 7 String

Yes and an RG1527 doesnt come close to that either! He also plays Surh's and resonators and again, an Ibanez comes nowhere near.

Sultans of Swing still absolutely slays me. The note choice and phrasing is astonishing.

Re: Knopfler 7 String

When I clicked on this thread, I was hoping to see a Mark Knopfler 7-string model but wishful thinking. I've always been a fan of his tone and Dire Straits as well.

Re: Knopfler 7 String

I've always played dire straits songs with my jem, actually Soultan's of Swing and Tunnel of Love in live version are my band's masterpieces...
