Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

I Just bought a 7 string RG7321. First I needed one as more and more songs I have been wanting to learn the bands started playing 7 string guitars, Second it was at a price I could not pass up. I was kinda wondering the same question OP had asked as when I first picked it up and tried playing something I knew just a string lower it sounded like ****ake.
So I then tried playing like I would my 6 string and added the 7 in every so often and I actually found that I can come up with some really wicked knarly Metalish sounding stuff.
I am thinking of finding some books,Posters, etc. so I can get the basic Idea of Scales, Chords, etc so I am playing them correctly and to help me when I get to coming up with my own music. But for now I have plenty of Guitar Pro Tabs in 7 string to work on for quite awhile plus I just did a couple tests and at least 3 songs I was Tuning down to dropped D or Dropped C I can play using the 7 string in standard tuning (I Believe) I know they Transposed without errors and with a quick look over it seems all teh fingerings are something that is playable without to much string skipping or massive amount of extra positioning compared to the dropped versions.
I will know for sure once I start playing them and see how it turns out.
I am hopeful though as I love this 7 string.

Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

It's just 1 string more which means more 5 lower notes.
The only difference is getting used to its bigger neck.
I was completely comfortable in about 1 hour, what took more time to get used was arpeggiating chords,I used to hit the wrong string if I wasn't looking to the fretboard.
After 1 day it was like playing my 6.

Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

I'm still getting used to it
its weird cause instead of the strings evenly spaced out the extra string puts one right in the middle of the fretboard, sounds confusing but imo gota practice a bit i find string skipping a bit tricky

Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

Played an 8 string the other day.
Can't say I'll rush out and get one.
Could land a FA-18 Super Hornet on the neck....

Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

for me it was alot of the music i listen to. my first 7 was also the 7620. i have had about 10 different ibanez 7s. i still have 4 including the 7620.as long as you tune it standard you basicaly use the 7th like the 6th. most powerchords are the same.

Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

I played an 8 the other day, and that was...different. It was confusing to play if I wasn't looking down at my fingers. I usually try not to stare at my hands but kept hitting the wrong strings. I can't say I'd ever have a use for notes that low, anyway. A 7 is plenty. Of course, this is coming from a guy who's only played other peoples 7's, and is on the brink of taking the 7 string plunge.

Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

So many people (I'm guilty of this too) just ride the lower string on ERGs - thinking in terms of how it can enhance chord voicings, arpeggios, etc. can really enhance your playing and speed up the adapting process. A lot of people think of the 7 string as basically a 6+1 string guitar, if that makes sense, instead of taking a holistic approach to the instrument. Navigating it becomes much easier once you think of the 7th string as a logical extension of the instrument. Just my two cents...

That's a good point. I've been thinking about this alot recently, as I consider converting to 7's. What methods do you recommend to get over that 6+1 mentality and truly incorperate the 7th into playing? I would think having mastery-or at least proficient capacity-with fretboard layout and intervals would be helpful(instead of relying on box shapes/movable patterns).
