Learning to Play a 7 string

So I was wondering how all you 7 string guys learned to play with the extra string. Did you just gradually work it in to your playing or learn from a book? What made you want the extra string to begin with? Is it a big part of your playing and songs?

Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

I started playing a 7 string because I played a guitar, loved it, and it happened to have a 7th string. I don't honestly like any 7 except the one I play, and I don't use the 7th string that much...
Unless I'm playing through Train Of Thought, lol \m/

Best advice give to new seven string players; play it like a 6 and let the 7th string work it's way into your playing naturally. Too many people get a seven string and decide the 7th is the best string so they just beat it to hell - way I see it, if you're only going to play the 7th string, just down-tune a 6!

Just play as you always have, and it'll find it's way in :-)

It really is the best advice. Somewhat it reminds me of people who asked me they want to learn to play an electric guitar LOL! A 7 string is more than going from acoustic to electric but no big deal though. You play it like you usually do and the guitar will get used with you and you two will be good friends in the end.

P.S. The second part of your post was really funny. It makes me laugh when I see people abuse the 7-th string.

Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

There is a really fine book on this subject: The First Chord Book For The 7-String Guitar. A Study of chords with an emphasis on melody, by Jerry Sims. ISBN 0-7866-5137-7 (Mel Bay publications) I first learned of Jerry Sims on an Ibanez video "7th heaven" with Vai and other 7 stringers. Jerry's book is form the jazz standpoint of the low string being an "A", which is how most jazz cats tune it. From a rock standpoint it is a low "B" which is easier to become familiar with as it is a fourth lower than "E" and a natural progression for scales and chords. The best way to it is to just learn some scales and chords and use them sparingly in songs that you know until you find the extended range possibilities of the 7. Once you do, you won't put it down!

Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

I got stuck on the 7 string because of the feel of the neck, it just felt more natural to me!!! Playing 6 strings just feels awkward now!!! Theres no going back for me!!!

Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

it was pretty quick and easy for me. and i never even mastered the 6 string, i just got ok enough to where i needed a decent guitar and ended up with an amazing rg1527 instead haha and i mean an rg350 would have been a little too good for me. so if i can do it, so can you

yep. it was very quick and easy for me. but dont loose your 6 strings. play them too because you want 6 AND 7 strings to feel natural to you. i failed to do that so now i have to re-learn 6 strings. but i can at least sweep and do minor shred stuff on both now.

Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

My first 7 was an RG7620 and I'm glad I went Ibanez. I've had a few 7s since, and none felt as comfortable to play as the RG did. Ibanez 7 strings necks are so effortless to get used to when transitioning from a 6.

I don't play 7s now though. TBH, I've rarely seen anyone make good use of the extra strings on 7/8 strings. Usually they just chug on the low strings and never even touch the rest of the strings.

Re: Learning to Play a 7 string

Check out some George Van Eps if you ant to see use of the 7th string beyond what most people do.

I would post links but I don't have the post count yet.
