Les Paul Custom SN 81731630 Mint - Can anyone give me an app

Anyone have a blue book or some other reference to value this for me? *It still has the original hang-tag on it - dead mint. *Also - does the SN indicate the year of manufacture (81?) as Ibanez does? *Is sunburst w/ all gold hardware.

Thanks in advance for any help!

- Chris

Most likely this is a 1981 guitar, built on Monday, June 22nd at the Nashville production plant. *This was the 30th guitar built that day.

If it's mint, you could probably fetch around $2000 - $2400 for it - about the going price for a new Historic re-issue. *I don't believe there is anything significant about that year of guitar which would make it worth anything more than current ones.

Nontheless it's a Gibson Les Paul Custom and those are my babies. *If you have pictures I'd like to look. *

Hope this helps,
Gabe

BTW - If you want to know the formula on figuring out LP S/N's then look at this:

Lets break down Chris's S/N as the example. *81731630

8 = First number in the year of the guitar... this would be a 198x guitar.
173 = these next numbers represent the day it was built. *The 173'd day of the year was June 22nd.
1 = Second number in the year of the guitar, hence 1981.
6 = what factory made it... *I think Nashville is 5 through 9, 9 being prototype guitars.
30 = the number guitar built that day.

I don't recall the what year this S/N tracking method started but I think it was in the 70's to current so it won't work on older Gibsons. *My 1954 Les Paul Custom has a S/N 41096 which means it's a 1954 and the 1096th built.

Confused? *I am.

Actually 1954 was when it was first introduced and re-introduced in 1957 with 57 classic humbuckers, discontinuted in 1963, then back again 1968... *The 54 custom model was made in low numbers and people picked up the Goldtop instead. *Incredibly, the 57 custom (even in higher number productions) are more valuable then the 54. *Check this out:

The pickup combination is unique and the mid tones are simply incredible.

Hmmm, had no idea there was a Custom in 54'. I know the PAF Goltops of 57' and 58' are some quite sought after mothers!

Ha! Yeah! *You can pick up an original good-mint 57' Goldtop for about $25K-$30K. *They are the most valuable production Les Paul ever. *No thanks! *If want a 57 LP Goldtop I'll take a historic reissue for $2500.
