I would first suggest setting a price range you want to look in, and this day in age I would suggest buying used because you can get great guitars for a relatively low price.

If you with with Ibanez (which I also suggest), I would try to find a used RG7620 or RG7621. There are always some on ebay. The only difference is that one has a Lo Pro Edge bridge and the other is hardtail. (If I'm wrong on that being the only difference, please correct me.) I would say don't pay anything over $500, but that may even be a pretty high price to pay. On ebay I see them around $300 and $400.

If you want to go for higher end 7 string Ibanez you have a few to choose from:
The Universe - There are quite a few models avaliable on the used market. UV777BK's are almost always on ebay, and as of late they seem to be going for cheap. UV77MC's are cool but really expensive. If you can find a UV7BK with the green dot inlays at a good price ($500 - $700) that would be the best way to go. They are Universe quality just without the cosmetic details.

Random Others - RG2027, this a cool guitar which people seem to be buying like madmen when one is for sale. The guitar has a peizo in the bridge so you can get an acoustic sound. The RG1077XL is an extended scale length guitar. The neck is longer bascially, I don't remember any numbers though. Anyways, that's a cool guitar and go for around a grand.

ESP also made some cool 7 string guitars. They end with the numbers 307. That's really vague though, so if anyone knows about these feel free to add.

I would recommend any of the guitars above. So this is just my opinion on what I think you should look into. Hope this helps!

Schecter makes some 7-strings, too. They have a new extended scale (26.5") 7-string called the Blackjack C-7 that looks interesting. (I think I'm going to buy one.) MSRP is like 800 bucks, give or take. Probably retail around 5 or 6 hundred US, perhaps less.

BTW, I have the RG2027. GREAT guitar. If you see one, jump on it.

The UV7BK was last made in '97, but the UV777BK is still in production.

I did exactly what Given to Fly suggested, too. I found a cheap used Jackson DR7 and loved playing it. Then I searched for an RG7620 and eventually bought an RG1527.

The Jackson has a thicker neck and feels pretty chunky to me. The Ibanez has a slimmer neck and feels much more comfortable, especially when switching between it and my Jem. I was worried that the 1527 would be too thin, but it's perfect for me.

I'll add another vote for the 2027.

That Schecter mentioned above looks pretty cool... I'd like to check one out, but I don't think there are any Schecter dealers in my town.

If you are not sure if you will like a seven string, find the cheapest, PLAYABLE one you can so you are not out alot of cash. I've seen the Schecter 7's as cheap as $160 used and the Squire Stagemaster-7 at about the same price. As best as I can remember, the Schecter neck felt alright but the Squire has a baseball bat compared to a UV neck. If you have the funds, get a UV. If not, these cheaper ones will at least get you aquainted with the 7 string guitar.

just got a 1527...WOW. what a NICE guitar. Then again, I just switched from a GRX40 . The neck is AMAZING. My only complaint is the trem (I never use it, but now I can't downtune cuz of the whole floating deal) and minor issues with the pickups. I litarally stared dumbfounded at the amazing tone I was getting out of my Flextone III when I hit that low B powerchord...My friend wants the 7321 as soon as he gets the $$$ when he heard it. If you are used to playing RGs, the switch should be fine. It takes about an hour or two to get used to the extra string (that one closest to you isn't an E, its a B!), and then you will love it.
