How does the new tuning feel? Are the strings floppy? Would it be better if you had a baritone?

Re: low b string guage?

I still haven't tried them! Two reasons: I'm saving all my money for a bass, plus I need a trem post because one of mine is snapped. I cannot lower the action on one side, so until that gets sorted, there's no point in messing with this old RG750.

As for the tension, there's no way they will feel sloppy because the tension, according to the calculator, is 85 pounds -- exactly the same as a set of 9-42 tuned to concert pitch. The guitar should need little to no adjustments to the trem springs and no adjustments to the truss rod to compensate for a difference in tension. What would probably have to be reset is the intonation, that's all.

Re: low b string guage?

Thanks Dee!

This saves me a lot of thought on the "baritone VS heavy gauge" issue! I haven't tried a baritone, but I think that it would feel awkward because of the longer scale. Still want to try one though.
Given the "awkward factor" I was thinking if the same tuning could be achived with heavier gauge strings. I'm used to them from my acoustic. But I had no idea how to do it right!

Thanks again!

Re: low b string guage?

I think I wouldn't be happy with a baritone either. I'm sure they are good tonally, but I like a slightly shorter scale length, personally. I feel comfortable on a 25" scale (PRS style), it's right between a Gibson (24.75") and a Fender (25.5") and the tension feels just right for me. Plus I don't have huge hands. I'm sure a baritone would be too much.
