Manufacturer Refurbished J Customs on Ebay

Hello all.

There are a number of 'manufacturer refurbished' J Customs on ebay where the headstock have a 'USED' stand and the serial has been removed or has a sticker over it.

A few questions to discuss:

What is the go with these guitars and why are the soo many of them? Are they fake or gray/black market goods?

Has anyone actually bought such an item?

How would resale be effected?

thank you

Uh, AFAIK, Hoshino doesn't refurbish old guitars, over here especially. I can't even get an OE/Lo pro trem arm from Hoshino directly over here.

Re: Manufacturer Refurbished J Customs on Ebay

This is really odd. I can't put my finger on it, but something just doesn't feel right about this... despite the fact that the seller has immaculate feedback, and the auction seems to be legit in every other way.

I've never heard of Ibanez making "factory seconds" available... least of all in the J-Custom line. I always thought that if a JC doesn't pass every stage of QA, it won't go out and is scrapped or used for parts (the good parts, that is).

To add more fuel for our discussion:

Ebay item number 121172719185

Seller has shown me picks of the serial under the sticker but the last 3 digits are etched out!!

Rich has a pretty nice used HRG4BX available right now. I almost bought it myself: http://www.ibanezrules.com/used.htm#JCustoms (look for the "HRG4BX")

... but then your 8527VV came along and I took that off your hands instead

Re: Manufacturer Refurbished J Customs on Ebay

I have several used in BX, 6 and that HRG7. BOP is the color for all the new JC's to the US. It's not BX, although we'd be splitting hairs over the fine points of the differences in the colors.

As for the MIRC cleared JC's on ebay, I've complained already about the numbers of Prestige, JC, and a few Sugi [FRM1's] that have gone to MIRC and then show up as these "certified refurbished" guitars through MIRC's network of dealers.

Until a couple years ago there was no such thing as a Second in MIJ. It was either fixed [which may include replacement of body, neck, or anything else needed] or it was broken down for parts. They were never sold. The way I've been told, HUSA techs are in short supply and the backlog of work got so big they just had to start blowing it out to make room. That was supposed to be the end of it, except, their tech department still hasn't been fully stocked and you're still getting guitars that should never be sold as seconds sent to MIRC.

To answer the question, yes, that has a great affect of future value when the serial is defaced, stamped used, S, 2nd, new serial sticker, etc. It just tells everybody for the rest of it's life it was a "problem", that may or may not have been fully or partially addressed.

Really? The "bitchin'" Jem you just sold was a 2nd and I have an '89 540PSH-DY that's a second.

The 540P has a repaired chip or two, which may have been what caused it to become a 2nd, but at this point it's actually a nicer guitar than all but the most mint used examples. That said, I did negotiate the price a bit lower because of the fact that it was a 2nd.

I like the JS20ths that are marked "S or Used" as these are. However, a majority of the sellers of these say nothing of it being a second in their description.

Back then there were seconds. By the time I started dealing in 96/97 they had a strict policy of no seconds, which lasted up until the last couple years.

I think that the higher quality, the more expensive the product, the less likely I would be to accept a second. In the Ibanez world, a GIO, a JamPack, an Indonesian model, sure, but a J-Custom? No way.

Peace

Re: Manufacturer Refurbished J Customs on Ebay

Apparently one of the items is in perfect condition and had no repairs.

It only has a very minor chip on the lower horn. Would such an item be regarded as a second (due to poor handling at the factory perhaps??)
