No offense to anyone but, why in the hell would you need an 8 string guitar? At that point, you wouldn't need a bass player anymore. I'm having enough fun with a 6 string.

To start things off, more coverage with minimal fretboard movement, more positions to start or extend any given scale off of, extended chords, etc.

Re: Messuggah 8 string ? scale ? and strings?

Why not have 8 strings if you can play it comfortably? Why not be able to play bass lines and guitar lines on one instrument (or just some really really heavy riffs)? 6-strings are great, but just because guitars have had x number of strings or tuned such-and-such a way for decades, doesn't mean that we're married to that configuration.

It may look either preposterous or pretentious to some to have guitars with extra strings (seeming to say, "look, I'm so awesome I need more strings!"), but why limit what a guitar can do? Do piano, sax, or violin players argue over being able to have more notes at their disposal?

"Do you really think that pianoplayers argue when you have certain pianos with 88 keys?"

Only nu-piano, mallcore floggers use the bottom octaves.
