Middle pickup placement on a Kramer Nightswan

Anyone know the reasoning behind having the HB in the middle and not the neck? Never have played one so I'm just curious. I noticed that Chris DeGarmo had a similar setup w/ a HB and SC in the middle on a couple of his Queensryche guitars ( a red ESP and the muticolor ESP 'Ryche logo guitar from "Jet City Woman" video). I'm thinking that this would give a smoother tone like playing on a neck pickup but cut down on the bass "mudiness" that you sometimes get. Any thoughts?

The only guitar I've played that has a middle HB in recent years is the Stephen Carpenter ESP signature model.

In terms of tone I agree, it's a compromise between the smoother neck tone and the less muddy, brighter bridge tone. I can't think of any other reason to do it this way other than for the "in between" sound it gives. Unless it's after two different bridge humbucker sounds, so it's just placed as near to the bridge as possible?

Of course there have been Les Pauls for years with the 3 humbucker configuration too.

I built a guitar with this pickup configuration. I used a Jackson J-95 (disppointing overall) in the bridge position and a Duncan JB in the middle position.

The JB sounded absolutely spectacular in this position. My theory is that by taking a pickup tailored for the bridge position and moving it to the middle where there's more string excursion, you amplify the amount of signal going into the pickup, without introducing too much muddiness. I found the sound to be very clear and open, with lots of punch and harmonic richness.

Jerry Garcia also had the same H-H-S pickup layout on his "tiger" guitar as Stephen Carpenter has on his signature ESPs.

So would you guys suggest a humbucker or single coil for the middle position? I was thinking of using a single coil, but maybe Tone Zones in the B and M positions would sound cool? I'm going for a smooth yet very articulated sound, esp when playing fast alternate picked lines.

Like everything, it depends on the sound you want.

I think two identical pickups in different positions might be a bit boring, though. I'd be curious to hear how different a ToneZone might sound in either position, but i'd probably prefer to have access to a broader palette of sounds.
