Which are the most overpriced guitars?

What do you think?

I can start off:

EBMM petrucci:

No Piezio, no matching headstock, 6-stringer, non-jp inlay.

retails at 20 000 nkr, which is about 2800 dollars.

Re: Which are the most overpriced guitars?

I partially agree with jem_fanatic. A played a few PRS's and they were ok, then the shop got me to try a R40 000 ($5200) custom 24 and it felt and sounded worse than my cheapy epi sg special. may have just been a fluke, but it was horrible!

Re: Which are the most overpriced guitars?

This could get quite heated ...

But I'd certainly agree with Zemitis and PRS (Artist pack & private stock rather than standard Custom models)

Generally I think all guitar manufacturers have some guitars in their ranges that are overpriced - due to the Marketing guys having things at all price points that don't necessarily reflect differences in manufacturing cost. The obvious case is signature guitars, but I guess that factors in the royalties the endorsee gets.

Re: Which are the most overpriced guitars?

Most Gibsons. A new LP Custom is $3299 now! In the last year Gibson has moved the LPC and most of the semi-hollows (ES-series) to the "Custom Shop" line so they could jack the prices up a couple hundred $. No thanks.

BTW - I had a Faded V at my house for a good month this past Summer and it sounded as good as a LP Classic I used to have (the V has the same pups, mahogany body/neck) but was a lot lighter and had much better upper-fret access. And they are $689 (actually they're blowing them out on most sites for under $600), not $1999!

Re: Which are the most overpriced guitars?

Well...... pick just about any "high end" guitar. You can look for several clues that all seem to have in common.
#1- limited edition (only xxx made)
#2- signature model (you too will play like) yeah right!
#3- long established name (some companies rely on their past quality)
#4- re-issue model (just like the one played in the movie, now you can own)
#5- custom run (this is very similar to #1, take a standard model and add "hand crafted" to the sales pitch)
I dare you to name one guitar manufacturer that hand shaves their necks now days..... and hand sanding don't count.

and of course last but not least.... who could be fooled by this:

#6- any Evilbay guitar ad that starts out with "beautiful, exquisite, electro acoustic, once purchase will bring you good luck, electricity guitar...... only cost $1.00 US dalla for you. with shipping of $450.00 US dalla..... you buy NOW!"

Last edited by jemplayer55; 11-16-2006 at 02:02 PM. Reason: Added "electricity guitar"...... thanks Tim!
