My 1987 540S

Hi all,
I've got an early 1987 540S, with the individual toggle switches and the jack input pointing downwards. I love it, even though it's got quite a few nicks and chips to the paintwork. I believe it's a rare one because of the metallic dark blue - can anyone confirm?

Anyway, I bought it from a friend, who had himself swapped it for his very early Jem. For some reason he decided to keep the Jem pick-ups and managed to get 2 singles & 1 Hum pink DiMarzios. I've since put a SD Humbucker in.
I'd love to get it back to the original DiMarzios. Is there anywhere you can still get them in good condition, rather than trawling Ebay?
Thanks in advance

(i can't post photos yet so if a mod could add them that would be great)

Re: My 1987 540S

DiMarzio will make them for you, but from memory they are pretty steep. I think it was about $120 for the humbuckers. A few people here had contacted DiMarzio directly and had them done. Do a search for new IBZ/USA pickups, I think that will find them.

Re: My 1987 540S

I believe your guitar came with the IBZ USA F2 in the bridge, which I happen to have for sale on CL here (took it out of my S540 custom). I've got it up for $20...not sure what shipping would be to London though...let me know if you're interested. You can see the ad here: http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rd...262841145.html

Re: My 1987 540S

The F2 is a later pickup. This uses an IBZUSA humbucker and IBZUSA singles. I've seen people on eBay selling IBZUSA's saying that they're the same as the F2, but that's not true. The IBZUSA is noticeably lower in output and much more vintage sounding than an F2.

Wrong color, but this is what a totally stock '87 Saber should look like.*

* I put a chrome pickup ring on to match the trem, but it should be a black plastic, angled ring

Re: My 1987 540S

No the old first run had the IBZ USA p/ups,the F series versions came later.
That being said, the F2 IBZ USA is the better p/up and suited to s series perfectly so if your not fussed about pure original specs....grab an F2.

Re: My 1987 540S

oops, my mistake...I was looking at the 540s on the Ibanez wiki and didn't notice that the F2 came out on the models after the original Roadstar pro 540s came out in '87...I was only off by a year... lol ;o) Still happy to sell the F2 for $20 because I'm not using it for anything...

Re: My 1987 540S

Actually, 1988 guitars still had the IBZUSA. The F series pups came out in 1989, along with the RG750 and RG760.

Re: My 1987 540S

ok, I'm no expert but that makes sense cuz I took the F2 out of what I believe is a '89 s540 ltd Custom...but then when I look on the Ibanez wiki I can't seem to find a s540 ltd made in '89...anyhow, starting to get off track of the OP...sorry

If you're ever looking to sell it, keep me in mind.

Re: My 1987 540S

Thanks a lot guys, it's all hugely appreciated.
I'll have a think about whether i want to put the IBZUSAs in or the F2s, then i'll have a look this side of the Pond for them because it's probably easier.

As for the colour, i've had a look at as many Ibanez brochures for it and never found the metallic dark blue but i assume they made loads of different ones.

Takin a Ride, that's a beautiful guitar in great condition. Sadly mine isn't in such good nick but it's been well used over the years. I'll never sell it though, it has too much sentimental value to me.

Re: My 1987 540S

Sorry, one more question. The IBZUSA & F2s are the humbuckers, what are the single coils called?
Thanks

Re: My 1987 540S

Brilliant, thanks Corey.

Interestingly, in Takin the Rides photo, the pups have IBZUSA written on it with no suffix, i guess because they're the originals.
Anyway, thanks for the suberb info.

Originally, there was an IBZUSA humbucker and single. In 1989 they discontinued them and brought out the F-series humbuckers and C-series singles. As an added note, I don't believe that the IBZUSA humbuckers are F-spaced like later pickups.

You might also notice that Corey's second link is an '88 Saber. They still used three switches but there are a few differences.

1. The control knobs are much farther apart.
2. The input jack angles upward. Only the '87 jack angled downward.
3. The tone knob is no longer a push/push type. Instead, the humbucker switch is replaced by a fatter switch that is 3-way to operate the coil split. You can see this if you look closely at the picture in the brochure.
4. The hardware color was changed to cosmo and the humbucker ring was changed to metal.
5. Many guitars also started having the "beehive" knobs shown in the brochure.
