My first RG..real RG550?

Hi,

Just joined cos I'm thinking about getting me an RG550. Been playing LP for most of the time so this is my first non LP.

Found a RG550 MIJ 1987 black for sale around USD600. Black with neon red finishing (zoom photo, rare according to seller), maple fingerboard, paint crack at back of headstock (but does not effect playability according to seller) with a sticker serial number F753437.

So my concerns are;

1. Is this a genuine 1987 MIJ RG550?
2. Is the fingerboard suppose to be maple for a 1987 RG550 BK? Saw the catalog, its rosewood (i think) for the black model.
3. Should the pups be showing V7/V8/S1 markings on them?

The photo will be in imageshack.us / photo / my-images / 585 / 37647157.jpg. Sorry for the link, still new here so could not put photos.

Any other pointers would be great

Cheers!

Re: My first RG..real RG550?

From the picture, it all seems to check out. I don't know only about the color, maybe some of the others can confirm, but Ibanez used to do some of those weird finishes in small runs, so it's possible it is original. It also looks to be in great shape for a 1987 guitar. I'd say the price seems very reasonable.

As far as the fingerboard, all colors came both in rosewood and maple AFAIK. Back then, even models that were only rosewood would get a maple fingerboard from time to time.

Here's a link to the pic for the others: http://imageshack.us/f/585/37647157.jpg/

Re: My first RG..real RG550?

It looks all original to me, I didnt see any special paint in those pics, just black. Seems very high for one with a neck crack, looks to be more than just a hairline also. You should be able to find better condition for less or mint mint mint for that kind of price. IMHO

Oh and the pickups should be v1 and v2 in the early 550s not v7 v8. Some of the early ones had no markings, but were still v1 and v2.

Re: My first RG..real RG550?

Viper-SFM, thanks for the link bro!

Fastmerc, if you zoom in and look closely, the neon red finishing is at the body's binding. At first I didn't notice it also but then if you look closely (zoom) near the strap button (top horn) there's some red there, so I guess its a red binding or something.

Maybe someone somewhere has a similar paint job? Or is mine a re-painted RG?

So I guess if everything checks out, its an 87 RG550!

I suppose I kinda see a glare of something, its really hard to tell from that photo. My guess is someone just painted a red line around it then there aren't any 550's with body binding that I am aware of.

Could also be auto-pinstriping tape. But like Fastmerc already said, they're asking too much for the condition it's in. IMO I would pass on this one. There's definitely much better specimens out there.

Re: My first RG..real RG550?

Yeah, might just be someone messed around and decided to dress it up a bit. Im sure its not official issue.

I know that its a little too much to pay for but then the condition isn't that bad, the cracks are just hairline paint crack easily fixed. Most early MIJ RG500 sells for about 300 to 500 depends on the condition. I live in Borneo so to order a used RG500 from overseas, after adding the shipping/insurance price, its not that far away from 600, it cost well over 100 to ship even more if express shipping. And most sellers wont even consider shipping overseas.

Still waiting for the close up pics for the seller especially the fretboard. Hopefully its not to worn out.

Cheers!

Re: My first RG..real RG550?

It looks to be in normal shape for a 1987 RG550. The pickups are unmarked on both 87' and 88' models. The neck humbucker is a vintage and the middle is a super 8A singlecoil. Bridge humbucker is also a vintage. These pickups sounds pretty good. I have a 1987 RG560 HSS and these old RG's are great guitars. But 600usd is to much for this guitar you are looking at. If it was mint then maybe it would be worth 600usd but it's still just a RG550.

Re: My first RG..real RG550?

yea, i guess the price that really puts me off a little. been eyeing that RG for a good 3/4 months and haven't made up my mind yet.

for 600 i can buy a good new modern RGs or others but i'm a sucker for old stuff, if it could talk, who knows what it has seen over its lifetime. Scandal? Wild orgies? hahaa..
87 - 2012 thats 25 years...

maybe i should be looking at the 25th anniversary RG? if i could get the 25th model at roughly the same price as the 550 maybe just a wee bit more, is it worth it?

As a owner of a 1987 RG550 (white w/maple finger board), I can say 1st hand that you should get the '87 model based off the neck alone.
IMHO, the maple board wizard 1 necks are the best necks ibanez ever made (at least for my hands). That's why the necks bring $200+ a lot of the time...
Also, there's something to say for a aged/broke in guitar, the pickups for one, aged pickups are a little warmer
You will LOVE it....

Re: My first RG..real RG550?

Wow... that was my first "real" guitar... maple FB and all. Wish I hadn't sold mine like a doofus >.<

As others have said, it looks legit, but my thoughts keep drifting to that headstock break. I guess I'd want to know A LOT more about that first. A properly-repaired break/crack can be a non-issue (only affecting resale value), and even be stronger than the original wood. But therein lies the big question: was it properly repaired? How bad was it originally? Etc, etc.

Just can't tell much without seeing the repair in-person and playing it. If there wasn't that one issue, I'd seriously consider this one, assuming everything else is original.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: My first RG..real RG550?

You can always unscrew the neck from the body, most likely all the models info will be stamped there.

And for the crack behind the neck, if it doesn't open more when you pull on the neck (slightly), it should be fine

If it's been for sale for 3-4 months, throw him a lowball offer and reference the neck crack that needs to be fixed.

Re: My first RG..real RG550?

Yeah, the RG550 is to be considered only as a "deal" thing, if you pay the price of a current Prestige used, there's no deal there!

Lower even more that offering, looks for the standard "issues", neck pocket cracks, bad setup (shouldn't be the case on a store, but still), the crack on the back of the head is a downer also.

IMHO, ballpark ammount for an RG550 should be under 500$ for a deal (offer him 400$)

Re: My first RG..real RG550?

thanks for all the remarks.

just got a few more pics here. Its a little beat up but considering its been 25 years it looks good. Gotoh tuners and according to seller V1/S1/V8 pups. fret life 70%. normal wear and tear, dings scratches. everything looks to be original...except for the neon red finish.

still wondering around looking around...
