my new 540R

hey im new here, i just picked up an old ibanez 540R its a great playing guitar, whats the deal with the radius line? i never see many for sale and there isnt much info online about them...anyways it seems to be an early model (first year?) its got the 3 switches and the push switch tone pot. i usualy play fenders and gibsons but i wanted something for some shredding and this fits the bill.
here are some pics from my camera phone so the quality isnt that great, but its in 9 out of 10 condition...real nice. the serial number is A700382 hard to make out in the photo, that would make it an 87?

any information about it would be great.

Re: my new 540R

I think once Satch adopted it as his model they didn't want another line that was so similar so you just went with the S models and more or less dropped the radiuses. Somebody correct me if i'm off on that?

they were designed by the great Fritz Katoh, the same who designed the Edge, the Lo-Pro Edge, the Iceman and many other great Ibanez stuff. for more info, read Rich Lasner's interview HERE (scroll down until you see a Radius pic).

they used to number them that way in the '80s, right until late '87, when the F came out. many say that the letter means the months they built that model (A=January; B=February, and so on), but i've got serious doubts on that, since the most part of the Ibanezs i've worked on started with "A", about 9 on 10. the remaining 1 on 10 started with "E". also, many semiacoustics (probably all of them) started with "H".
probably i'm wrong, but that's just what i've found. btw, i'm a local setup guy, that's why i have the chance to see many, many Ibanez guitars.

Re: my new 540R

Congrats. They are sweet guitars. I have 2 - one an 87 with reverse blue burst finish w/ the Ultra neck original edge trem and one a Red '92 (although serial no. indicates '91) w/ Wizard neck & sharktooth inlays - lo pro trem. Your '87 prolly has a backstop in the trem cavity that stabilizes the trem in case of string bends/breakage. Somewhere on this site is a manual that can help you keep that adjusted correctly.
