Re: My newly stripped and oiled RG-520QS

Wow... nice job! How did you strip it? Chemical, heat or just a lot of sanding? Most people that strip and oil their 520QS bodies usually end up losing the quilted sapele veneer.

superhairycamel: The "blotchy" and "streaked" patterns are the wood grain. The front of the guitar has a thin veneer of quilted sapele, which is a highly figured wood. The back is mahogany.

Wow, that wood is beautiful. I love blue, but i've gotta say that your guitar looks better with the new paint job. But what's with the area around the pickup selector? Looks unpainted for some reason.

Pretty

How long did it take you to strip the finish?

Re: My newly stripped and oiled RG-520QS

I used an orbital sander on the entire thing, because I wanted to keep the sapele top, and people who used heat and chemical stripping lost the veneer. It took about 3 days to do. As for the one spot on the pickup selector, that was one spot that we went through, and im kind of dissapointed. But I wasnt going to strip the finish from that one spot. Thanks for the comments.

Re: My newly stripped and oiled RG-520QS

Stain the spot where you sanded through with a darker colour. If you choose the right colour you should match the venner and that would make it harder to see. Other ways to fix that problem would be:

1) Add a 5 way switch cover (like the ones you see in the S series)

2) Add a pickguard. A custom wood pickguard may look very good on that guitar.

Ive always liked the brown RG520 much better than the blue one. Your guitar has a very similar look to the brown one now. Congrats

and quilted or flamed woods, how is this done, is it just how the wood is or is it a seperate process?

No, the wood is naturally like that.

Re: My newly stripped and oiled RG-520QS

You could probably stain that area by the selector switch to make it less noticebale. Guitar looks great anyway.

Re: My newly stripped and oiled RG-520QS

UPDATE!

I've since grown tired of the imperfections on the guitar, so I decided to make it "melted wood" a la Conklin Guitars:

So with a dremel, orbital sander, and tung oil, here's how it turned out:

That's AWESOME. Have you done the back too? I think you should clear coat it too.
