My Oddball Radius Guitars

Hello,
Now that I figured out how to add links to pics, I thought I'd toss in a couple of my favorite Radius guitars. The first one is probably not extraordinary, except that I haven't seen another one in this color. It's the "Pearl" that appears in the 1988 catalog. Sort of striking in it's own way. Here it is:
Pearl Overall
Pearl Front
Pearl Rear

The other is a bit rarer. This one is a 540R LTD with HSH pickups and an AANJ. I had been on the hunt for one of these for a long time before I found this one. The AANJ edition only appears in the 93 catalog, and apparently they didn't move a lot of 'em. It originally had a Wizard neck on it (with the sharkfins), but that really doesn't belong on a Radius, now does it? So I found a JS1000 neck, and did the minor conversion to adapt it to the AANJ. So now the guitar is essentially a hybrid JS1000/Radius, with a middle pickup and an AANJ. I keep thinking about changing the pickups, but the F-series actually sound really nice in this guitar. Here are the pics:

540R LTD Overall
540R LTD Front
540R LTD Rear

Cheers!
Bert

Bravo! I'm a Radius freak and that 540RLTD with the AANJ is truly the "holy grail" of Radii. The first on you have is "Fountain Blue" not Pearl. Pearl was a white pearl. The large slanted photo in the '88 catalog is Fountain Blue. I had one too, and sold or traded it. I can't remember. But Ashley Bass has it now. It's a great color, but it's the same color as my Maxxas, and I didn't need two Fountain Blue guitars!

Congratulations!

Fountain blue! Waddya know about that? All this time I've been calling that guitar "Pearl" and now I suppose I'll have to rename her! I knew you were a big Radius fan, too. These were such great guitars.

I think there are a few of us Radius nuts out there. Nice pair! I love the AANJ on the 540RLTD, but never cared much for the middle pickup or the sharky inlays.

Neat guitars you got there! It's good to see the neck conversion on the 540 worked that well, I vaguely (sp??) remember your thread about it a while back.
Hope you shimmed the Lo-Pro saddles because of the different fretboard radius!

Well, time for 'Rad-Fest 04', I sponsor beer and my backyard

Hey, that makes 3 of the 4 AANJ radius models I know (354,355,470,540) together on this board. Collect them all.

Rad-Fest would have to be at the guy's house who had the most of them. I'm weighing in at 9 right now, down from around 12-15 at any given point. I'm mad I sold any of them! Don't get me wrong, I don't regret it, I'm just mad I should be able to have all of them, even all of yours, too!

(wait, frank, first lure them to your house......... )

OK, let's count 'em up:
1993 540R-LTD (HSH with AANJ and JS1000 neck, pics above)
1991 540R Jewel Blue (HSS, the reverse blueburst thingy)
1988 540R Fountain Blue (HSS; pics above)
1989 540R Blue (HSH, regular neck joint)
1992 542R Candy Apple (SSS with TZ trem)
1992 442R Cherry Sunburst (HSS with maple fretboard and TZ trem)
1992 442R Trans Blue (HSS with maple fretboard and TZ trem)
1993 RV470 Gravure Purple (HSH with TZII trem)
1993 RV470 Gravure Tobacco (HSH with TZII trem)

Looks like we're tied! One of us had better go buy another one...

Nope, RV's don't count. :P They aren't the "real" Radius shape. That's like saying the new SZ's count as Sabers! HA!

Well, I only have 2 now. But I've HAD a bunch; maybe 8 or 10. I just had to weigh in with all you radi-freaks.

Bestest guitar ever.

What? RV's don't count? You mean I have to go buy THREE more?

Well, actually I agree: The RV470's were sort of a strange offering for the Radius line. BUT they're a good choice for a HSH alder bodied guitar with a traditional trem. The catalogs mention that the flatter body allowed for the clear pickguard, but that was hardly worth the tradeoff to mess with the cool contours of the Radius. I'll probably be letting one of the RVs go pretty soon.

As another certified Radius fan, my wish is that Ibanez would reissue them so that after I am forced to sell my 542R, 442R (sorry Frank ), and 540RHH, I could just buy a new one when my $$$ situation improves.
