neck and body mismatch

this is actually my first real post, so bear with. i have an ibanez rg-470 that i've had since new in 2000. i am starting to mod it and customize it to my liking as it is one of my work horses (i've got about 10+ guitars). i finally took the neck off today (first time ever) and realized that on the neck it is stamped rg-550R #2, the neck pocket is stamped as a rg470. why is there is a mismatch is my question. the guitar is new i even have the inspection tag somewhere in my house. anyone have any ideas?

Re: neck and body mismatch

Quite simply because the 470 and 550 have the same neck specs.

Re: neck and body mismatch

but will the serial number on the neck match up to a rg-470 or an rg-550?

Re: neck and body mismatch

The serial number doesn't care what it's on.

+1

serial denotes:

1. factory (yours) "F" stands for fujigen or something
2. year: it's either the first digit or the first 2 digits depending on year, then month and # it was made or something.

Re: neck and body mismatch

My understanding of it is this:

F = Fujigen (the factory it was made in), then if it's pre-'97 (or '96?), the first digit signifies the year. After '97, they changed it so that the 2 digits after the F signify the year of production. The remaining digits tell you the production run, so my own guitar, an RG750, for example, has the serial F041830, which means mine was the 41,830th guitar built in the Fujigen factory during 1990.

If I'm wrong, someone feel free to correct me. If Guitarslinger is right in that the number denotes the month too (he probably is), then mine was the 1830th guitar produced at Fujigen during 1990 and it was made in April of that year. This to me sounds more realistic, but if someone can clarify, I'm interested to know.

I was just guessing. But,after they made the year 2 digits, did the serial numbers become longer? I'm sure they'd have to account for that extra digit.

Re: neck and body mismatch

Well the neck would also most probably have RG470 stamped on it along with the serial number, so yes it would match up. The RG550R stamp appears on a few different model RGs just because the neck specs happen to be similar.
