Are the necks on the 1550M's wider than the old Rg550 necks?

One of the issues I have with old Rg's is that both E strings are ridiculously close to the edge of the fretboard (on some not all , some consistency issues were obviously going on there).
I looked at a couple of 1550M necks recently and there is noticeably more room to the edge of the fretboard on both sides (f'n Yay!!!! makes me very happy) are the necks being cut wider
or is the string spacing on the Edge pro narrower than the original edge trems?
A 550 with a slightly wider and slightly thicker neck could be my ideal 6 string shred machine.
so what's the story here?

Yes, they're 2mm wider at the heel now. They're still the same at the nut so the progression is gradual, but it does make a difference over all.

I've also heard that they are a bit thicker as well (I'm hoping)

Plus would on 09 edge pro on an 1550M have locking studs on the trem? (I'm looking at one I may pick up)
thanks for any info

I have a 2009 RG1550 and a 1990 RG550, and yes, the necks are a little wider, and rounder, as stated.
As far as the locking studs, no. No locking studs. I don't abuse the bar heavily and have found no need for the locking studs myself, but I'm pretty sure Rich sells a 'kit' that will allow you to add the locking studs without having to change the anchors, if you find you really need/want locking studs.
Overall, it is a great guitar. It was my first electric guitar and even though I have small hands and find the older 550 easier to play, I'll never give it up.
And it's just so bleeeeew! (Phantom Blue)
I'd buy it if I were you, even without the locking studs.

The 2003-04 RG1550 with a maple board had the traditional 56 mm heel. The 58 mm heel is a spec change for 2005 (I think) with the 5-piece neck.
