Need to find my I-dentity (see what I did there?)

Hey Folks,
As I also run a large guitar forum, I swore I wouldn't make one if these posts... but here I am.. I tried. I have a couple of pictures of a guitar I'm hoping to buy, but there are a couple of oddities that are throwing me off figuring out the model.

I tried to attach a couple of photos but it looks like I'm a restricted newbie... and I can't do links either. I don't want to just waste posts...
it's been modified with EMG Pickups, looks like a good job "except" for the battery box... or lack thereof...

It looks like an S Series 6-String.
Sleek and no pickguard.
It has what looks like a Satin Mahagonay body.
The fret markers are the "Shark Tooth" markers.
It is a bolt on neck with a neck plate.
The neck looks like maple with a rosewood fretboard, 22 frets.
It states "Custom Made" on the 21st fret.
It has EMG pickups.
That battery hole is in an odd place on the back, and doesn't have a cover and I can't figure out where a cover would go. (I guess we'll have to wait for pictures for that bit).
It has what looks like a Floyd Rose style tremolo

From my best "guess" from the front, it looks like an S540.. however, the neck markers, and the fact that it's a bolt-on neck with a neck plate are throwing me a curve.

Hey... I tried.. This will be Post #3... only two more to go to post pictures.

Thanks in advance

Re: Need to find my I-dentity (see what I did there?)

Yes, sounds like a 1991-92-ish 540S-LTD (serial number will reveal year). The LTDs had the shark-tooth inlays. By '93, they converted to the AANJ heel so yours preceded that change. The "Custom Made" inlay was just a goofy marketing thing they did on some S and R series guitars for a few years. The EMGs didn't come as original equipment so they were added by a user later.

See post #4 for link to old catalog scans:

Oh crap -- I'm sorry, Rich! I didn't realize that was the case. I also didn't know you still had the catalog links up.

So I'll try again. Go here for the old catalogs:

It took me 6 months to scan the 600+ pages, of course I still have them up. The Russians were the first ones to steal them with all the "vintage" catalogs stolen from the now dead Vintage Ibanez Euro site. ;/

Yeah, I remember when you were doing that and posting about it - no small task, for sure. I just didn't see them in your banner and hadn't thought to look under the "Resources" links.

Anyway - fixed. And I sent Vladimir a PM about that Russian stuff.

Re: Need to find my I-dentity (see what I did there?)

Thanks Guys,
A couple more posts and I can actually post the pictures I guess I asked the current owner to check for the model on the back of the headstock (if it has one) and the serial number. I guess that will tell the tail, was just hoping to do some research before I actually paid for it, although it's a great price regardless. The trem looks a little worn but he sais it's not rusted, just discolored which seems reasonable.

The EMG PIckups is the weird thing. Yes I know they aren't stock, but where the battery is, will it's just odd, and I'm not sure I can explain it if I tried. One of those "a picture is worth 1000 words" moments.

Miles

The Russians, they're at fault for everything!

Re: Need to find my I-dentity (see what I did there?)

Still think it's a modified 1992 540S-LTD in OL finish (abbrev for oiled or similar). Catalog doesn't show that finish available on LTD, but that kind of thing sometimes varied from the specs in the catalog.

The EMGs, middle knob on the front, and rear battery compartment appear to be after-market mods. That's a very clean routing job for the battery, however it's not hard to match the OL finish with tung oil. I suppose it could also have been a custom install for a sponsored artist, or a European release or something, but I don't recall ever seeing an Iby with original EMGs.

Maybe someone else has an idea.

S's are mahogany, strip the finish and that's what it would look like.

Re: Need to find my I-dentity (see what I did there?)

Yes, could be a strip/refin. But the 1992 catalog does show an OL finish on the maple neck 540S (not the LTD), so I think it could be either original or a refin. You're probably right though, since it has a number of other mods.

Bottom line only seeing the neck pocket would answer, and then if that is altered, might not.

Re: Need to find my I-dentity (see what I did there?)

So no one else is somewhat confused by the contradiction of a seemingly nice set of modifications but then a battery compartment just kinda dumped in the middle of nowhere ?

I'm wondering if I can get a custom made control cavity cover that would either cover the battery or at least accommodate regular battery box (flip open door thingy).

Thoughts.. Also.. in general where does the S540 sit in the scheme of popular, entry, mid-level, nice, sucks etc... Assuming good condition. I'm not paying a lot for it so I won't be insulted... you folks seem to be pretty straight shooters.

Thanks I have this weird feeling this won't be my last Ibanez in the stable. The more I research, the more I seem to be drawn to them...
