Red face Need help to choose a S5470

Hi. I would like to buy a S5470 and I am limited to the options that are available here in Bangkok.

I’ve been playing for ages with a RG550LTD (now with Dimarzio Evos) and I also have an American Deluxe Strat. No big complains about the RG550LTD (although it would require a new tremolo) but I want to buy something new for my 50th birthday. I had a SV5470 on my hands and I liked it. In particular: the lighter weight, the shape, and the ZR-2 tremolo.

I have found 6 different options at different prices but I don’t know the differences very well. I would appreciate any advice. I cannot try them because most are online shops

S5470BWRVF – $1,374
I am attracted to this one because it’s the cheapest but, are there major differences with the ones bellow?

SV5470F
– $1,119 (was $1,812)
This one is even cheaper! and the original price was higher than the S5470BWRVF. What is the meaning of SV? For this price, would you choose the S5470BWRVF or this SV5470F?

S5470QRBB - $1.957 (was $2,175)

S5470QRBB
- $1,848
Cheaper than at the previous shop, but I’m wondering why they do not mention that the original price was higher ($2,175)

S5470BBK - $1,680 (was $1,960)

S970CW - $1,500
That’s not a S5470. Is it worth? What’s the main difference?

PS:

There is a shop that has a second hand EGEN18 for $1.730.
I don’t want to start a new debate about this guitar (there is already a nice thread here: http://www.jemsite.com/forums/f16/egen18-a-74482.html )
but I would like to know if someone has actually compared it with the S models mentioned above, to tell me if it would be worth for this price.

I do not like "Dragon Ball" at all, but this is what I find “challenging” about the EGEN18:

- The 10 combination switch. I already installed it myself at the RG550 and I can’t live without it. Not a major issue since I could install it myself at the S5470, but it would be nice to have it factory mounted.

- Scalloped frets: that could be interesting.

- Pickups: the sound of Herman Li sucks like vomit. I hope that it doesn’t come from those custom pickups. Any experienced opinion about their sound?

- Kung Fu Grip: holly sheet… if I had to play live with that guitar I would cover it with plaster and paint the whole body in another color But I do not play gigs anymore, so that would not be a major issue.

- Tremolo: Is the tremolo different to the one at the S5470?

(do not take this postscript about the EGEN too seriously, I'm just chewing over...)

Re: Need help to choose a S5470

I’ve made a comparison table collecting data from different places:

At first glance, it seems like the new S970 CW is the winner.

Any thoughts about the S970 as a replacement of the S5470? I am wondering why it is cheaper than the S5470Q
Could it be just because of the cheaper labour at Indonesia?

Thank You!

Honestly man, they're all pretty much the same, except for the S970 which is a Premium model, and seeing as the price isn't that far from the others i'd forget about it and get a Prestige/Japan one.

Sorry i missed this part, yeah thats exactly why, Premium models are below in both price and quality as the Prestige models, Ibanez is based in Japan, so generally speaking Japanese models are above anything else in their line up.

Re: Need help to choose a S5470

Well, they're close but definitely not the same. The Premium model will not only be produced by different workers (i.e., not quite as skilled on average), but it will also come with the "Premium Wizard" neck which, as you can see, sports a rounder radius and a thicker neck profile. In theory, a thinner neck and a flatter radius should facilitate faster playing and wider bends, while the rounder radius should make rhythm playing a bit easier.

How important are these differences? That's up to you to decide. Some might say that, with a blindfold on, no one would know the difference between a 17mm thick neck and an 18mm thick one, or a 400mm radius and a 430mm radius. Those who've owned both probably think a bit differently.

As I understand it, the SV series represents Ibanez's periodic attempts to market a more traditional or vintage variation on the Saber. So I read the SV as the "S Vintage." What that usually means is that you get simpler bridge (rather than an Edge Zero or a Lo Pro Edge), and perhaps different pickups.

Thank you very much for the comments. Now I start to understand the differences between Premium & Prestige and I will definitely go for the S5470.

Re: Need help to choose a S5470

Ok, I’ve narrowed the decision to the only 2 options that are in stock:
  1. - Second Hand EGEN18 for $1.730 (perhaps negotiable)
  2. - New S5470QRBB for $1,848
  • With the S5470 I'll get a ZR2 while the EGEN has a Edge Zero. I don't know which one is better.
  • With the EGEN I've got the scalloped frets and some custom nuances.
  • I don't think that the pickups will make a huge difference.
  • I could add the extra switch to the S5470 myself but it would be nice to have it factory-mounted.

Has anyone played with both guitars?

Leaving aside the aesthetics, which one would you choose?

I will go to check the second hand EGEN18 next Monday but I cannot test the S5470 because it is an online shop.

Any advice about how to do a fast check of used guitars?

Edit:
I've just learnt another difference: The EGEN EZ has knifes while the S5470 ZR2 has ball bearings. Not that I dislike the knifes, but on a second hand guitar… the edges could be worn! I’ll have to check it out carefully.

If you like How the Egen looks go for it, i haven't played a ZR2 trem but the EZII is a pretty decent trem.

Re: Need help to choose a S5470

The final decision has been very easy, because the EGEN18 was in a deplorable condition. All metal parts were totally corroded, rusted and in green color. It was even impossible to adjust the micro-tuners. Everything should be replaced

I am the happy owner of a new S5470Q RBB
