need help choosing pickups

hi all.
i'm new on this forum and i want to ask some questions; recently I bought a Ibanez RG 2550Z with Dmarzio/IBZ stock pickups. It doesn't sonds bad, but I really want to swap them with Evolution or Activator. I asked so many people, and the answer was - it doesn't worth the money, it will not improve the sound so much as was expected. Now my question is. does someone has this experience? Shall I do that, or I leave it as it is ? thanks in advance!

Pickups will make a difference. You should go to the Pickups section of Jemsite, and do a search there for opinions on the pickups you are interested in. Also check out the reviews section of jemsite and check out the pickup reviews.

I'd also check the 'tube, there are so many pickup demos on there...probably a good chance of the pickup combo you want on a basswood ibby

the people you spoke to were wrong. Changing pickups is ALWAYS worth it. in any guitar you play. If your main squeeze is a Gio, its still worth it if you arent planning on stretching out to a new guitar any time soon.

so, it really boils down, what kind of sound you want.

Re: need help choosing pickups

thanks for your advices. I listen a lot of demonstration via youtube, and I decide for this combination:
bridge - Evolution
middle - True Velvet
Neck - Evolution
how is that? I own a Boss GT 10. do I choose the correct combination? I usually play heavy metal, but also I like clean tone, for this reason I didn't go for Activator or Activator - X.

L.E. I forgot to ask: what about F-spaced ? shall I choose normal spaced or F Spaced?

Re: need help choosing pickups

you want F-spaced. F-spaced means that the pickups are wider to accommodate the wider string spacing that a tremelo system causes.

Re: need help choosing pickups

I understand you want clean but play metal. If you identify a sound and position of pickup you are looking for then you can better customize the various tones. I may be stating the obvious but make sure the pups are 4 conductor, which are the case with the pups you are considering.

Some other options - Bill Lawrence l500xl for the bridge is versatile and handles metal and clean nicely. Dimarzio Area 61 for mid if you don't really rely on the position 3 by itself, this is a great pickup for the 2 and 4 position on RGs. For the neck I think you could throw in a PafPro and it should allow for some nice grinds and cleans for a classic sound or you could try the Dimarzio LiquidFire that Petrucci uses which is nice and ballsy. F-spaced

You come up with some stuff sometimes.

My JP comes with a LiquiFireand a Crunchlab. You telling me its worth my while to upgrade ? To what? Or i have a Custom 24 which came with 57/08's what am i upgrading to ?

I had a 1550 here and i thought the pickups are great, same with the Q's they put in the S. I thought those where spectacular. Always worth it is nonsense.
