Need a new neck

I just broke the headstalk off of (well nearly) my 1993 540S. I am noticing lettered codes on the Wizard necks for sell, how do I know which neck I need? My s/n is F336909 if that helps.

Thanks,
Ernie

Re: Need a new neck

your 540S guitar has 22 frets. So the neck you get has to be the same. a 22 "fretter". not a 24fret neck...usually the necks are stamp in ink at the heel. most are stamped with the model of the guitar.. but not always. not all necks are the "WIZARD" low profile. So know what model of guitar the neck came from.

What type of neck do you need? the older Square heel neck joint style or the ALL ACCESS NECK JOINT style?? make sure your "new" neck is made for your 540S.

when you switch out necks? they match up very well. if its the same guitar model (RG540S) and same style (square heel neck joint or AANJ HEEL neck joint).

you can check evil bay for necks. or other auction sites. Search "IBANEZ NECK"
The seller usually has a good description of what guitar the neck came off. year and make and model.. You can even check out the sellers other auction items and find the rest of that guitar's parts.

Your guitar was made in 1993. the first or first 2 number tell you what year it was made in.. look it up.

need pics of the neck joint and the rest of the guitar body for a better match for your neck.. hope this helps.

Re: Need a new neck

Only the first digit of the serial number for a 1993 neck indicates the year. Ibanez went with the 7-digit numbers in 1997 on the back of the headstocks. 3bay sellers bandamonium and proaim always have these types of necks.

Re: Need a new neck

I am taking it in toady to have it looked at and I am optimistic they will be able to repair it, but there is a lot of cosmetic damage to the binding and paint on the front side of the headstock.
I have been wanting to pick up an RG, maybe this is the push I need.

Re: Need a new neck

I wouldn't even bother getting a new neck, my luthier tells me that glue is just as strong as wood these days. I have had a few necks repaired with no issues at all.

These two tuts will walk you through the process of repairing a cracked neck. They are awesome, and I repair like a pro--a BIG thanks to Rich for his tutorial!

And another thanks to Brian for his.

Re: Need a new neck

I had my GR neck joint repaired 15 years ago. It wasnt' as bad as yours, but it was close. The joint has held strong ever since. I've read that some repair techniques make the joint stronger than before. Not sure if I buy that, but my repair has been solid. It cost me $75 back then. I would think $100 now or in that range. It took a loooong time, and by the time I picked it up, my Les Paul needed the same treatment. double ouch.

good luck with the repair.
