Never Seen fret Wires like This

I purchased a used Jem off of Reverb. Supposedly lightly played for two weeks.

Played OK but when I went to replace the strings I noticed what looks like dents where the strings are, on the fret wires, most noticeably on the G through the high E up to the 12th fret. More substantial than they show in the pictures, they all look like the fret on the right side where you can see the indentures.

The bushings are also worn to the point where they barely support the bar.

Plays OK but never seen fret wires in this condition before.

Emailed seller and awaiting response. Anyone seen this before?

Re: Never Seen fret Wires like This

yep it is fret wear. That is what happens when you play a guitar a lot, especially if you have someone who clamps down hard with the left hand. It is super common on acoustics where people literally only know or play open cords. The first three frets looks like garbage and the rest are untouched.

You saying the bushings are worn on the trem bar also points to it being played a fair amount.

I am not sure what the indo/premium fret wire is suppose to be made out of. either way, if the wear wasn't disclosed in the sale i'd return it.

It might have been played for two weeks, and by that they mean that it was played constantly for two weeks in a World Record attempt for longest consistent guitar practice, they played nonstop for 336 hours, no breaks, no sleep, no food, just practice!

I have a bunch of 80's and 90's RGs with similar or worse fret ware; some are playable others really need a refret as their fretbuzz would attest to.

Regular fretwear from being played; a fretdress is going to be necessary if it bothers you or causes some buzzing. Fretwear is going to appear at some moment if you use the guitar regularly and I don’t consider it a cause for passing on the axe if you like it except if you have similar Jems available at similar price with no fretwear. Someday it will need a refret.

Finally, you can buy new bushings for your trem bar at any dealer; they came in bags of 12. You will need them in the future.

Re: Never Seen fret Wires like This

People lie on the internet.
Maybe the person you bought that from played it for two weeks but they person they bought it from probably played it for longer.
I love eBay / Reverb / etc sales descriptions noting "like new" or "near mint" and they got chips in the paint or fret wear. Or another great one - like new but missing trem bar.
Doesn't look like bad wear on that Jem but certainly it's more than two weeks worth of play.
Good luck!

That looks like it can be addressed with some minor fret crowning. I have to do it about every five restrings, just to make bends a little smoother.

The seller is a liar. There is no way that he played it enough in two weeks to make it look like that.

Looks like any guitar that has been played often for more than 2-3 years and doesn't have stainless steel frets. It's instantly recognisable as a Premium fret job too, based on the shape of the fret ends.
