new 1987 rg550... pink!

Just got an 87 rg550 and when taking it apart for the first time i noticed that it does not having locking studs at the bridge... whats going on, where these replaced at some point? Or did they not have them back in 87? The posts are very loose in the holes, is it possible to replace them with locking ones... will they fit right in?

You should have locking studs, but if your current post do not have the lock, they were replaced. This could also explain the loose fit.

Pull the stud all the way and make sure you have the locking inserts. You should have a bottom to the insert for the stud to lock against.

Just looked it up I should not have locking studs as they were introduced in 88.

You would be misinformed.

Locking studs were introduced in 1985, and every '87 RG I have owned has had them.

Check your guitar.

I don't know whether to believe you or wiki... both reliable sources imo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibanez_edge

Re: new 1987 rg550... pink!

Instead of relying on Wikipedia (unreliable), why not check your guitar.

The Edge always had lock studs, and the Edge was introduced in late 1985. Unless you think the 1986 Ibanez catalog is wrong.

Re: new 1987 rg550... pink!

My '87 RG550 did not have locking studs, but then it changed hands twice before I got it so previous owners may have swapped it out.

You can get a set of locking studs from Rich and you should be good.

Re: new 1987 rg550... pink!

Like the OP, you probably had the correct inserts, but someone swapped the studs.

You have to remember there were many people who broke the original studs trying to lower the trem and forgetting it was locked. This was one of the reasons Ibanez stopped using them.

This is so correct..I've got two 87 RG560s, and an 87 RG550...all are original, all have the locking studs..and yes, wiki sucks..lol

Re: new 1987 rg550... pink!

the locking studs being discontinued was a huge mistake.
Ibanez should do more advertising and propaganda on the proper usage of the locking studs, since it's the major factor on the EDGE stability.
