New 7string guitar, bad tone ?

Hi Guys,

Just bought a DBZ Barchetta 7string.
It has EMG 707 and EMG 81-7.
http://www.dbzguitars.com/guitars/se...nt-fr-7-string

Is it normal that this guitar has a very low tone, almost enough to not be able to notice if I'm playing a 2 vs a 3 string chord. The low strings are so muddy.

I can get that tone easily by taking any of my 6string and dropping the tone knob about halfway trough. (Jem 7VWH with EVOs, Another guitar with Seymour Duncan and a Les paul with Gibson Dirty Fingers).

Is it beceause of the string gauge? I've got 36 instead of 32 for the low E.
Is it beceause of bad wiring ?
Is it just that my other guitars have super tone?
It it just that EMG pickups sucks ?

Thanks for answers !

Maybe the battery is dying. I have no clue really.

I'd lean towards a dying battery too. If the battery is good, maybe the pickup height is the issue.

36 gauge low E? Dafuq? Thats ridiculously thin. Are you sure you don't mean 46? Even 46 as a low E is quite thin.

Yeah didn't notice the gauges you posted. If that's not a typo, then that's definitely a BIG part of the problem.

What are you using for the low B? And in what tuning?

But my guess is bad wiring.

I'm using standard tuning, no drop.

Anyways... I set the height of my pickups the highest possible without sound being scrapped. I changed the battery.

The tone is not NONE but it's just muddy and not very interesting. From the 4ths string to the 7th the sound becomes muddy (all fat strings). I usually use .09 strings on my other guitars... it may just be the string gauge.

It isn't the strings. Going from 9's to 10's doesn't make the massive difference that everyone claims. Though I'd go just a bit thicker on the low B. Maybe a .62 or something.

My guess is the wiring.

Have you tried switching the pickups around? Like from bridge to neck and vice versa? Might be worth a go since each uses a different type of magnet and that they're basically a plug n' play setup.
