It's a custom shop guitar. The standard USA select guitars don't have flames on the back of the neck. Nor do they have flames that wrap around the sides of the body. They also don't have the matching headstock with flames, they are black.

They don't currently make a red ghost flame Sl2h. They offer blue, black, and green ghost flames. Those guitars are equipped with black hardware, not chrome.

This is a Dan Lawrence signature flame guitar.

Re: New guitar day...

Quite the beauty. Tell me, what possessed you to go from the 22fret bolt on s series to a 24 fret neck-through Jackson. I see you have another one. I would think those guitars would be quite different in feel. Is it hard to get used to each model after switching? Also can you get some specs together as far as wood and pickups. Grats though man!

I was looking for a another new guitar. I already had the new S2170 Korean made prestige and wasn't really impressed with it. So I tried to find something else. I wanted H-H pups, trem, and slim neck. Long story short....I played a USA Select SL2H in my quest for this new guitar and really liked it. So after having a couple of those, I went for this custom shop guitar pictured.

The other guitar (blue) was primarily purchased to keep some of the wear and tear of the Red ghost flame guitar. I don't really have a problem switching back and forth. Though, occasionally I'll get confused around the 17th fret.

So, bottom line...the guitar plays/feels awesome and that's why I "switched".

I'll try to put some specs together later.

curious about your S2170 though, i've been looking at those and starting to get GAS for that exact model you have (burl top - skin disease looking top). i used to hate the way the top looked but it has grown on me BIG TIME and i like it more than any other S series top out there right now. you can PM me with your thoughs and all on it if you don't want to detract from this thread. thanks and congrats again!!

Re: New guitar day...

No problem.

This is my take on the S2170, I've had two.....

Inconsistant QC. SO play before you buy.

The neck pocket isn't as deep as my other S guitars. That raises the fretboard, which raises the pup and the bridge. It's a Wizard II neck. The Wizard II on these is a differant shape then the RG wizard II. It has more meat in the "shoulders" as Rich would say. I don't really care for the shape too much. The new necks also have more radius. This limits how low you can have the action without notes choking on bends. The fret ends are nicely done and the fret leveling is decent. The binding work on the neck is pretty good and the truss rod adjusts smoothly.

The ZR is pretty good It's a little bulky in my opinion. It takes more trem arm action to get the same effect as a knife edge system. Overall it works well and stays in tune. The Zero point thing, which is removable, makes the trem stiffer. The trem arm holder sucks. If it isn't kept tight it will break. The tensioning mechanism isn't very good either. I put teflon tape on the threads of my trem arm. The intonation tool is cool and works well, just watch the top when your using it.

The pups are mediocre but serve thier purpose. The balance in volume on switch position 2 and 4 is a little low.

The top is cool looking but I think it could be sanded a little smoother. The aww factor is good. Whenever I take this guitar out people ask about it. I've taken it to some music shops to check out some amps and always get comments and people want to buy "one of those".

The body binding is a little sharp on the edges. I think it should be rolled a little more. I can see glue residue around the binding beneath the satin finish. You have to look at an angle but it's there.

It's made in Korea. In my mind, that's the reason there are some "issues".

Overall not a bad guitar, but not like my old S guitars. For the money it's a solid instrument. You have to watch out for the dodgy QC though.

Hope this helps.

Re: New guitar day...

thanks for the great review and info. if i decide to get one i will try to hit some larger stores so maybe i might have a chance at getting my mits on one before i buy. i might have to go the online route, again - if i decide to buy one.
i have an S Series project in the works so another S isn't something i need but i have been really digging the look of that one lately and missing having a playable S on hand.

that Jackson is the SHI*!!! i would have a hard time dropping $2000+ on almost anything except one of the SL1's with Flames, but hell, i would have a hard time dropping that kind of dough on a guitar no matter what it is. i need an endorsement for guitars, strings and Jager.

you must be still floating on a cloud, i know i would be. i would choose the ghost flames first and then the snake skin finish. they discontinued another awesonme finish i really liked, black holoflake.

did you have to custom order that model or is it just a standard custom offered by Jackson that you special ordered? if you don't mind telling me or PMing me what those cost and who you feel is a good broker for those, i'd sure be appreciative.
i LOVE my 7VWH (Elvis) but would swap it in a heartbeat for a nice ghost flamed SL-1. i know that is sacreligious on jemsite to say but for those that have played them, they know why i say that (except for the people that don't like glossy painted necks).

Re: New guitar day...

Mine is a SL2H, prices are close though.

About $1400 for a solid color USA Select. Around $1800 for graphics like the ghost flame. Matt's music is a good place (banner above).

I paid alot more than that. Mine is a Custom Shop guitar special ordered by Fuller's Vintage guitars. That being said, even the USA selects are assembled by the Custom Shop.

Mine is near perfect. I've seen "issues" with some the USA select, then again, I'm pretty picky.

$1400 bucks for a guitar with MOP inlays, Real Floyd, Real SD pups, Ebony fretboard, CTS switches and pots, quarter sawn maple neck through, etc. is pretty fantastic IMHO.

Oh, I prefer non painted necks....but I'm not really having any issues with the painted neck on this guitar.

..And I know why you say that, once I played one of these....I had to have one.

Hope that helps.

Re: New guitar day...

$1400!!!!?? holy USA Jackson BATMAN!!! to get a price like that on an SL1 makes me wish i didn't buy two the RG20ths. i need to stop gassing for other guitars and just set my sights on getting a new one with flames or snakeskin by years end after getting my Mesa Express 5:50 .
that is just sweet!
are the issues "small" or something that would detur you from buying another one or buying it all over again now knowing the issues?

Re: New guitar day...

I PM'd you a pic with a couple of the "issues".

I would do it again... I must admit it was a pain.

But now I know what to look for and what questions to ask.

Re: New guitar day...
