New to Ibanez and need advice on RG550 and RG1570 please

Hi Guys,
I just decided to learn guitar. I am wanting to basically learn 80's metal lead. I bought a squire strat and the cheap fender amp a few weeks ago. I should have done more research. This week I picked up a spider III Line 6 75W amp and wow...what a difference. Now I am wanting to upgrade my guitar as well. I am looking at a 2007 20th anniversary RG550DY that is mint with case and everything as new for $900. I have also been seeing some other RG guitars like the RG1550 and RG1570 out there and basically, I don't know what the differences are. I want a good quality guitar for 80's metal lead. I like the small neck, the large cutout, and the big frets. I don't know much about pickups. STill learning the basics. Can anyone tell me if the RG550 is the best route or if a modern RG would be better or even the same for the same or less money? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to learning more.

Thanks!

Dave

you are looking at pretty high end guitars you would be happy, or should be happy with either of those choices. the quality of all the guitars you listed should be about the same. only differences your looking at between those models is small ones like, pickguard, type of trem, etc.

generally speaking, the higher the model number the better the guitar BUT the 550 was before the prestige line. so an older rg570 is the same guitar as a prestige rg1570

A good bang for the buck is the 2011 RG350.
I just bought a yellow one (RG350MYE) and it plays realy good.
They sell new for $429 and used for $250.

Re: New to Ibanez and need advice on RG550 and RG1570 please

i would say (and this is totally MY personal opinion) that since you're pretty new to this game, set your sights slightly lower at this time. the 550 (and 1550/1570) are all excellent guitars, no questions asked, but do you need to be spending $900 straight away.

id been playing for 3 or 4 years before i got my first ibanez. is a '99 RG450DX, and its done me proud for 12years. the neck isnt quite as thin as a 550, the stock pickups arent as good, and the trem doesnt even begin to compare to the edge/lo-pro, but ive still been able to play along to maiden, metallica, vai, etc to a pretty competent level.

now ive just invested in a 570 and 750, because i feel im at the skill and knowledge level to appreciate and realise what the differences are between all of these.

as a relative newbie, id suggest to you to maybe look at something more along the lines of the RG350s, or a MUCH lower priced used 550 or similar. this way, if you decide in a few months time that actually learning the guitar isnt for you, you wont have laid down best part of $1k for no good reason.

not trying to be a kill joy or a scrooge at all, just want to be a voice of reason!

good luck with whatever you decide on tho!

I'd get a RG550 over any "modern" "Prestige" RG any day. Actually I own a RG550XX BK (black with rosewood fretboard) and it's a very good guitar, you get the best of both worlds - reinforced neck, but still with the original neck profile and mighty wonderful Edge trem And the pickups are V1/S1/V2, which are (imho) MUCH better than V7/V8 found on RG1550/1570.

Standing by Sebastian on this one, I pruchassed one on a whim, I have been playing for almost 25 yrs, I have many high end guitars, about 30 total.
I was so impressed by this guitar, at the store and at home, it has exxtreamly good qualitys about it: Neck, Trem, Pick-ups, tunners, locking studs, feel, sound, I would have bought it again with out question.
I got mine new for 329.00 out the door. Now, do I think it is better than my 08 RG1570, no I do not, the 1570 IMO is worth every penny!
but with saying that, for starting out RG350MYE is great, and will save you a few $$$ you can use twords more equiptment.

Re: New to Ibanez and need advice on RG550 and RG1570 please

Thanks for the replies guys! All very helpful! I am looking at hopefully getting 'one' guitar and that will be 'my guitar' for years and years to come. I'm 43 years old so starting this a little late in life. I bought my daughter (12) a fender accoustic this spring and my son (14) wants the strat that I have when I upgrade. Hopefully the three of us can keep each other motivated to stick with it. It's something I've wanted to do for a long, long time. I really like the looks of the 2007 RG550DY. I just wasn't sure if the 1550 or 1570 had any huge advantages over it for virtually the same money. Are the neck profiles different between those and the RG550? SInce I'm kind of old and slow...... I need all the help that I can get with speed!

It's never too late And the neck on 550 is a little bit thinner, than on 1550/1570.

Re: New to Ibanez and need advice on RG550 and RG1570 please

The 2007 RG550 is the 20th anniversary reissue of the 1987 RG550's, they have the original Wizard necks. The spec on the Prestige RG1550 and RG1570 is different, main thing is the trem, pickups and different neck profile depending on year. You can't go wrong with an early RG550 or RG570 and can buy those models pretty cheaply thses days.

Re: New to Ibanez and need advice on RG550 and RG1570 please

Thanks for all the advice guys! I found a barely used (four months old, maybe 10 hours) Ibanez RG1570 Prestige. Black with tread plate pick guard and hard case. DR Tite Fit strings plus another extra set of them. Cleaning kit, etc. brought it home for $550. Perfect shape. Barely played. All original paperwork. Sounds SO much better than the fender squire strat that I had. So far very happy with it! Thanks again! dave

You should browse through our classified section. There are several RG550's for sale right now, and all at good prices.
