New J-Custom RG8420 vs RG8320: Thoughts on mahogany or alder with EMGs

http://www.ikebe-gakki.com/search_fair.php?fairId=48

This looks good - like the RG8470, but with
H-H pickups (Active EMGs - 81 & 85)

Or you could look at it as like the RG8320 but with
Mahogany body/Maple top instead of Alder
Black Onyx BX finish instead of Biker Black BBK textured finish
Vine instead of offset dots

Now I'm torn between the RG8320 and RG8420 - ... I'm about to do some tone comparisons between an ash RG1302 and mahogany RG1702 (both currently TZ/AN equipped) with different passive pickup combos, and compare them to my alder Jackson with bridge EMG85. Trying to find my ideal wood & pickup combo.

(For the record, TZ in ash sounds a lot better than TZ in mahogany - gives a nice rounded classic rock vibe in ash, but totally muddy in mahogany. TZ in any guitar seems unsuitable for thrashy metal muting on the low strings, though - no dynamics in the attack. AN neck sounds nice and mellow in both ash and mahogany. EMG85 in a alder guitar is tight but a lot warmer than an EMG81; great dynamics on full-on distortion but loses a little warmth compared with passives - maybe a mahogany body would sort that out?

Anyone compared EMG-equipped mahogany guitars against the usual alder or ash EMG equipped guitars? I'd be interested on opinions.

I have both a 8470 and 8320 with EMG, so I can really telle you several differences....

First, the 8470, is much much heavier than the alder one! A LOT!!!!
The 8320 is as light as my JPM wich is basswood.... realy more confortable...

Then I agree with you.. Mahogany + TZ = muddy lows and not anough "bite"....

I would have liked the EMG on the mahogany one and the TZ on the alder one... that could be great!

Anyway, that 8420 could be a great guitar with an Evo in teh bridge and a FRED in the neck...

Finally, Edge Pro and EMG with Vine from Ibanez....
Now tough decision between 77VBK, 8420 and 8470
