New Pickups for my RG920QM

Hey guys, I'm a newbie on this forum and this is my first post. I'm actually reposting a question I put up on TGP because I didn't get any feedback there.

I'm thinking about getting a new set of pickups for an RG920QM with basswood body and rosewood/maple neck.

Here's what I'm looking for:

Mid-High output
Tight Bass Response for riffing, but able to get some classic-ish tones Alnico V hopefully (but I'm open to Ceramic)
Strong Mid-Focus

I'm looking for sounds in the hard-rock to metal range like Soundgarden, Tool, etc, but I'd also like to have some nice sounding liquid lead tones.

I generally find Duncans to be too flabby and bassy (Custom 5, JB, 59, etc). I've recently got some Dimarzios that I like including the 36th anniversary (not enough output & not modern enough for this guitar) and a Tone Zone (I think too much bass for this guitar).

I like a warm mid-focused modern sounding bridge pickup that's not flabby. I also tend to find nearly every neck humbucker model to have to much bass, which I think is why I seem to like the PAF Joe.

Anyway, I'm considering:

BKP: Aftermath, Painkiller (Maybe too extreme for me though)
BKP: Rebel Yell (Too much mids???)
Dimarzio: Breed Set
Dimarzio: AT1 + PAF Pro
Duncan: Full Shred Set

Let me know your thoughts. My mind is open.

well, welcome to the club, we do have a section here for pick-ups and wiring for questions just like this. I'm surprised, you are the first person I've seen who wants to change those pickups.

Breed set - I like.

Kinda true though what jmi says. Are you changing because you don't like the stock pups (ie. eq can't solve, etc)?

I'd say a breed set, or a john petrucci combo.

This is probably criminal, but the honest truth is that I don't have the guitar yet - hahahaha. I've just never liked any ceramic pickups that I've played and I'm anticipating a pickup swap. I did repost over in the pickup section also.

Re: New Pickups for my RG920QM

yeah, the general thought is they are the best pickups in any ibanez guitar right now.

I would wait until you have the guitar and play it for a couple of weeks then choose.

Yeah, I'll surely test out the stock pickups. I was impressed to find out that they are made in the USA Dimarzio. At first, i figured they were Dimarzio's "Duncan Designed" style cheapo. To be fair, the Duncan Designed pickups aren't nearly as bad as a lot of stock pickups I've tried, but they aren't great either.

I was also thinking that a set of cream pickups would look really sharp on this guitar . . . we'll see. I really do appreciate all of the feedback!

I wouldn't go THAT far. They're pretty good but not the best.

Best in a guitar under a grand?

Also If you haven't bought the guitar yet, Check out www.IbanezRules.com, Rich is a member here and will get the guitar up so it's ready to play out of the box and really takes care of us around here.

In an Ibanez, yes. The Charvel So-Cal comes with a Tone Zone and an Evo in the neck for $900.
And yes, I keep bringing it up because that's how Charvel is trying to eat Ibanez's lunch.
