New RG655 or Used Jem 7v from 1998?

I'm looking to get an Ibanez guitar. Ultimately i would like a new Jem 7v with edge trem and rosewood fretboard, that is out of my pricerange atm though. How close is the neck on the RG655 to the recent Jem 7v neck, and is the rg655 neck closer to the recent 7v neck than the 1998 1 piece Jem 7v neck?

Or in short: get the new 655 or the somewhat beat up Jem 7v from 1998.

Thanks!

Personally I would go for the JEM, if it's already beaten up, you can play it with impunity

That said it makes you sound like Steve Vai, without giving you the ability to play like Steve Vai... The RG655 is an amazing guitar, but has a far more generic sound. (I've never really liked the Pickups it comes with)

My main guitar at the moment is a 2002 from IbanezRules with the platinum level setup, if you're getting a 655, I'd strongly recommend buying from IbanezRules and shipping it across the Atlantic. The setup costs really are worth it.

What's the color scheme of the RG655?
I somewhat prefer the RG655 to that 7V.

Can be any available color. I'm looking at the black or orange one though.

I'll have a look at the costs getting it from ibanezrules. But import taxes and whatnot from USA to Europe is crazy.

Denmark might be different but when Rich sent my JEM over from the US to the UK there wasn't much difference in price. Plus the setup is worth the extra money, turns a production guitar into custom shop playability...

Usually i can add 33% to the price if purchased outside the EU.

Re: New RG655 or Used Jem 7v from 1998?

For me, it would depend on how beat up the 7VWH is. 1998 one also comes with ebony fretboard which is cool. I'd prefer the 7VWH as well, as long as it's in good playable condition. Like Jono said, the 655 is more generic, although I like TZ/TV/AN combo. In fact, I like that combo more than the Evo's for bluesy stuff.

The 7VWH is going to have a thicker neck than the 655. The 1998 7VWH neck is thicker, but not as wide as more recent models I believe. So to answer your question, yes, the 655 neck is slightly closer to the more recent 7VWH's compared to the 1998 7VWH, but not by a lot. The 655 is slimmer than them both, which I like, but they're all fast playing necks when it comes down to it.

It's not badly wounded more like rough around the edges.

That doesn't seem too bad. Half my RGs have nicks and chips in the finish around the body's edge since they're used. Some people don't mind, some people do. I prefer to look locally and pay < $1000 for used with some blemishes rather than > $1000 for new. My favourite current model has been the RG3770FZ (available in my region but being discontinued now I believe) but at a price tag of > $2000. I just picked up an RG3120 for < $1000, a very similar guitar. Is it in perfect condition? No, but I don't mind.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is, that it's up to you if you don't care about blemishes, it's all preference. The important thing is if it's in good playing condition - no neck warping/twisting, frets are good and electronics working.

Also, are you a Vai fan? The JEM really screams Vai. Do you have the option to try them both out?

I don't have the option to try any of them out. I have a friend with an Ibanez 2550ex though that also has the super wizard neck, i assume thats very close to the neck on the rg655.

If the neck is straight and the frets are good i do not mind dings and chips etc to be honest.

And yes i am a Vai fan, actually if i decide to get the rg655 i would probably swap the pickups to evolutions.

Haha. Yeah the 2550ex and 655 are very similar, only difference in neck spec is the width and the # of pieces of wood. 56mm for 2550ex and 3-piece neck (if it's the 2003-04 one and not the 2550e) and slightly wider 58mm for the 655 and 5-piece neck. Some like the extra width, some don't, some don't care, again just personal preference.

Are the 655 and JEM similar prices?

Yeah, the Jem is a little more expensive. The RG655 is new.

So now i have a Jem, and i can't help but feeling i should have another. I am looking at a 70v, it's 2012 and that means i have to be careful right? Do all of 2012's have the intonation problem? Oh yeah, here are a couple snapshots of my 7V. The serial is 2016 btw.

Nice guitar. That's a big price difference between the RG655 and the Jem 7V WH. You must have really wanted that guitar.
