NGD!

So I've been wanting a 7 string guitar for a long time, and I had a hard time finding one that had all the features I wanted. The only options I had was to get a custom built guitar, or this one; Ibanez RG7321.

I figured that since this is my first 7, I probably shouldn't spend 2k+ on a custom built guitar. I would have bought a more expensive guitar if there was one with the features I wanted but alas...

The main things I was looking for was a fixed bridge, 25.5" scale, passive humbuckers in a H-H format that doesn't look overly flashy.

I'm really impressed by the neck on this thing, really quite comfortable. And given that I have long fingers, some might say unproportionally so, the wider 7 string neck feels quite natural to me. The action out of the box is great with surprisingly low fret buzzing (given the low action).

What I'd like help with though is replacement pickups. The stock ones are good, they're a lot better imo than what most people have said in reviews. But regardless I want to replace them with DiMarzios. I have a set of crunchlab/liquifire in my jackson which I really like;

I'm considering getting the same ones for this Ibanez but I'm thinking I would take suggestions for other models like the evo or air norton... I play mostly prog/metal but more on the lower distortion side of things. I like a good clean sound as well. I bought this guitar mostly for the extended range, not for the chugga chugga. Any recommendations?

Oh, I should add that whatever pickups I settle on, I will get them purple, I really want that to be a theme for me. The black-on-black stock look is a little boring haha.

Re: NGD!

Wow--that's a beauty! As far as replacement pups--what sound are you chasing? Do you want something heavy and punchy but still a little bright? Or, do you want something more on the classic side?

...oh, and I also looooove the way your Jackson looks with those pickups. It's hard to tell with the lighting, but are those purple? They look a little dark to be blue---just too hard to tell.

Re: NGD!

I'm really looking at getting the Petrucci sound.. which I already have his pickups in my jackson. So I'm torn between getting the the same pickups, or getting what Vai uses maybe?!?!

Those pickups in my jackson are purple. Whatever pickups I get for the RG, I'll be getting them in purple!

Re: NGD!

Maybe you should look into bobbin toppers? They're stickers which you can attach to pup for different look. At least universal jems has those.

Re: NGD!

For real! I have the same RG7321 and I'd LOVE to get purple Dimarzio pickups. I think unless you get them custom made it's a no-go. No stock purple 7 Dimarzios.

Re: NGD!

For those who are interested, I got mine as a pair off an ebay store. I think it was probably easier that way than custom ordering them from the local guitar store.

Re: NGD!

7 string pickups dont sound the same as their 6 string counter parts Proceed with caution

I HATE active pickups, but on the 7 strings, they seem to sound so much better with so much clarity. Id check that out as well.

Re: NGD!

I love the RG7321.I reallly want one and paint it and do some other fantasies with it LOL... The only thing missing is a whamy bar..not a full Floyd, I just need somthing to make the scoops and doops not the typical orgasmic screams..

Re: NGD!

Why not go with zebra pickups? They look good on a black guitar:

Yes that's mine (7620) - Crunch Lab 7 + PAF Pro 7, and for the sound I'm after, I can't imagine a better pickup than the CL7.
