NGD-1988 540SHH DY

Well I was very pleased to get a new to me Ibby today, but now Im in a quandry.

This is an 88 Sabre, all original (even still has the backstop) in Desert Yellow. I bought this guitar to use its parts for another build. But this thing is MINT. Just some super minor wear on the Low E Saddle, Couple of pits in the cosmo trem base. Super minor scratch on the edge of the headstock. No real dings, chips, or anything else. The DY is super brilliant, if there is any fading it is almost to hard to be seen by the eye.

Now even though they are great Im not a S guy, I like my 540p's and RG's. Soooooo, do I still rip it down, keep it whole for my collection, or sell it to someone jonesing for a first year DY saber.

I am a believer in keeping guitars as they come for the most part. The only reason I do project guitars is if the original body is beat up or neck got broken, yada yada.

There's your answer right there......no need to tear up a guitar that's in better than normal condition. If you don't really want to keep it (I'm not an S guy either) then sell it to someone that would love to have it. If your just looking for hardware, there's always some of that around.

Re: NGD-1988 540SHH DY

lol...I know right. Thats why I like to keep guitars together. Its just I have a nice 540p body laying here with no parts to put on it I can't play my original 540p anymore, well I could but, but if I do I will end up rubbing off Satchs sig. It is getting retired to a full shadow box type case to hang on the wall for all eternity...lol.

LOL--just the most of us!
I'm not a Saber dude, either--but just found a PN and will try to make friends with it. Hell, play it for a few days--maybe it'll grow on you. If not--save it for trade-bait later on.

Re: NGD-1988 540SHH DY

Is this the one that was on eBay recently? If so, don't part that guitar out. Finding a nice condition DY is so rare. I would have been all over that if I hadn't just bought an '87 version of the same guitar from someone here.

Re: NGD-1988 540SHH DY

No this wasn't on the bay. This was a private sale. So I will go with my gut (and the consensus) when I opened it and keep it together. The question now is to keep or not to keep. Of course this now means I have to put my nose to the grindstone and find an old S that I don't mind tearing down (ie one with a beat body, but good neck)

Re: NGD-1988 540SHH DY

You should be able to find a nice P or S neck on eBay without having to get an entire guitar. The 22-fret small dot necks don't fetch as much as some other necks.

Re: NGD-1988 540SHH DY

I had been looking and bidding on some, but they seem to get pretty outrageous in price or they have the nut crack. But I basically need all the hardware, trem, P/u's, US neck plate, etc. So by the time I piecemeal one together Ive spent much more than the guitar Im building would be worth when finished.

Re: NGD-1988 540SHH DY

Honestly, plenty of 540P's come up for sale and they never go for much. I'd just buy a complete one.

Re: NGD-1988 540SHH DY

I do keep my eye out constantly for p's, If they do come along they are usually beat, same ol story. They typically go for more than S's, in my experience. Unless its an unusual one.

Re: NGD-1988 540SHH DY

I've recently seen really nice P's go in the $400 range. I don't think they tend to fetch even as much as $500. They're generally a pretty unloved guitar.
