NGD: 1990 RG550 Coral Mist Metallic

Thanks to those who helped me decide to swap my 520QS for this 550 in Coral Mist Metallic (link below for pics). Battle wounds abound and are photographed... time to love this thing back to life.

http://s1222.photobucket.com/albums/...st%20Metallic/

Hard to capture that Coral Mist color in the photos. In the pics of the headstock you can see the hairline crack coming from the right-hand bolt... also a tall "n" shaped crack just to the left of it. I've gotta fix those because I'm super paranoid about them. Plus the guy before had 9's tuned down a whole step, in drop-C, where I'm a 10's in standard guy... so there's a lot more tension on it now. I digress.

Now trying to figure out what sort of pickups I want in it. Currently my amp is geared towards my more vintage-y guitars- a Strat, a Tele copy, a killer Electra 335 copy... I don't have an amp for the more guitar-centric/shreddier stuff. Might have to work on that but then I'd have to justify it since I never seem to get out to play... we'll see.

Especially curious in suggestions for the single-coil pickup. I like the Fender quack big-time, but would want something with enough bark to keep up with whatever's going in the 'bucker positions, probably something along the lines of a PAF Joe in the neck and maybe the Duncan PATB3 Blues Saraceno in the bridge. I'm no metalhead but I do want to be able to rock hard when necessary.

All in all happy with the axe and tweaking the setup. Thanks for looking.

Dings and doinks aside, getting that one in for a 520QS is one hell of a deal.....congrats on that one, good score!!

Re: NGD: 1990 RG550 Coral Mist Metallic

Thanks for the reassurances. It's just the neck crack that makes me wonder, since my 520 had no structural issues to speak of. Hopefully with a pickup upgrade this one will prove to be every bit the instrument my 520 was. Glad to have a H-S-H RG for the first time.

And yes, knowing that Coral Mist Metallic was more or less rare made me that much more interested, for sure.

Enjoy his pics.

PS: Why didn't you mention the flamed maple fretboard??? Or did you and I'm missing it?

Re: NGD: 1990 RG550 Coral Mist Metallic

neck pocket cracks are no problem(they are just in the paint 99.9% of the time). It is very common on square neck pocket Ibby's(or on most good bolt ons that use a neck plate).

My number 1(a 1989 black RG570) has the worse neck pocket cracks that you could imagine and it is solid as a rock and freakin sustains like a beast

oh, sweet 550 also....nice score

Thanks hotrod- the crack that I was worried about is the one just behind the double-locking nut. I had read about the cracks in the neck pocket and how they're usually just in the finish.

I used to play in a band with a guy who had a guitar in Coral Mist. We called it the Pink Titty. 'twas set up very well, nice score!

I love my coral mist, one of my favorite colors for the 550, good score!

Yeah, cracks around the locking nut bolts can be a bit more concerning at times(depending on how bad they are). Fortunately they are usually pretty easy to fix and in most cases are fixed back more soild then they were before the wood cracked and also most times can be fixed in a way that you can not even see the crack anymore or even tell it was ever there. There is a great tutorial somewhere around here on how to fix those cracks step by step. Maybe someone here can link it for ya.

I highly recommend a diMarzio "the Breed" in the bridge. That thing has great punch but works great for clean stuff too. Best pickup at the most things I've ever used.

Re: NGD: 1990 RG550 Coral Mist Metallic

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and I've also got an rg550 coral mist. I'm going to have to change the bridge pickup to something that is a bit more 80's. There is a bkp warpig in the bridge position at the moment. Sorry but I can't post links to my photos yet because it is my first post here.

BTW, is this a rare colour in an rg? Do you have any info on how many of these have been made?

Re: NGD: 1990 RG550 Coral Mist Metallic

I've no idea how many were made, but I understand that 1990 was the only year they made the 550 in Coral Mist Metallic. That qualifies it as rare enough to me, anyway!
