NGD 2004 Prestige RG1550FM limited run!

Found this at a local pawn shop. Spot production model from 2004 and really rare from what I understand. It has a mahogany body with flame maple veneer. They wanted $799.99+tax, but I left with it for $700 CAD, which I thought was a great price. Apart from a couple really tiny scratches/nicks, it's in amazingly new condition. Great looking axe in person.

I'm not 100% on keeping it though. This thing is REALLY heavy, I have seriously never felt a heavier RG. It's probably the heaviest guitar I've ever had, aside with my old Yamaha Super Flighter 1000. It's almost the weight of both my 3120's combined, and for that reason probably wouldn't be the best option for live applications. I've never heard the stock V7/V8 pickups sound so good though LOL! Must be the mahogany..

What's your guys' take on heavy guitars? I might also have the option to trade it for a mint RG550 RFR Reissue. What do you think?

Sorry for the crappy phone pics:

Wow, gorgeous.

I have a mahogany/flame maple J-Custom (RG8527VV, 7-string) and it weighs a ton as well.

congratz! very beautiful RG, much prettier than my J Custom) and the price is just a steal, i guess the axe is very rare too since 99% of rgs are made of basswood

Steveche and Webmaestro!
how much do your 1550 and 8527 weigh in Kilograms?

my JC is 4.5KG and my PRS is 4KG and i have no problem with them
though one day i bought a 70s les paul which was something like 6 kg, that was really too much so i returned it straight away without even checking the sound much)

Does it bug you if you're playing standing up? Does the heaviness mean anything in terms of wood quality? I'm just wondering why they would make these so heavy. Especially when Ibanez always uses the light weight as one selling point for basswood. I have other mahogany RGs that aren't nearly this heavy.. 3120 and t320

Thanks! I'll check when I can. It's really damn heavy though lol, and it's not like I'm weak or anything. I still have to decide if she's a keeper because of the weight.

How heavy is it? Did you weigh it?

Honestly, that thing is beautiful. If it was mine, I'd change up the pickguard, some new Dimarzios in there and off you go. What a beautiful neck with the flame in the back and the abalone dots.

Very nice!

I really don't play it much, but when I do I use a bass strap. I discovered the comfort of bass straps some years ago and have used them ever since. Also, I don't play live anymore, so I rarely stand with my guitars. Sorry, wish I was more help here

As far as heaviness being an indicator of wood quality, I have no idea, but weight alone is probably not a very good single indicator of "quality." I think there's much more to the equation than that.

I've no idea how much it weighs, nor any way to weigh it. All I know is that it's noticeably heavier than my basswood RG's (also all 7-strings).

I owned this before, I don't remember calling it heavy if comparing to other guitars I owned from those years.

Re: NGD 2004 Prestige RG1550FM limited run!

Thanks guys.
@PBGas I haven't weighed it yet
@psychoshredder from those years I have two 3120s (from '01 and '02) and a '98 520qs, and this thing definitely is noticeably heavier

you should keep it dude, no matter what.
it's a good guitar.
the reason I let her go was the edge pro.
If only it's edge instead...

Indeed it is very nice, and plays sooo nice. Neck is very similar to my 2001 and 2002 RG3120s, except maple fretboard obviously. Edge Pro is 3rd on my list as well, after Edge and LoPro, since it requires a locking stud mod to be as stable as the others. But it's still a fine, high quality bridge, and I like it better than the Edge Zero for reasons that I don't know lol. EZ just feels different, and I hate the piece of plastic in the hole, it always moves on me when taking the arm out.

I have to thin the herd though, so it's a debate.. I have 11 guitars right now and would like to narrow it down to 7:

1998 RG520QS blue
2001 RG3120 TW
2002 RG3120 DR
2001 JEM7VWH (ebony, LoPro)
2005 JEM7VWH (rosewood, Edge Pro)
2007 RGT320Q RBB
2009 RG3570Z CA
2008 RG770DX LB Reissue
1991 RG565 BK
2004 RG1550FM
ESP LTD H-1001 Deluxe black

I'm thinking of getting rid of the LTD H-1001, RG3570Z, RG520QS, and either a JEM or the RG1550FM (or both, and keep the RG520QS as my "beater" guitar since it's chipped up).

Getting rid of guitars is always the hardest

wow 11) i thought 3 was too much, i had these
- Fender Jeff Beck Signature strat 2006
- PRS McCarty Limited with solid rosewood neck 1999
- Ibanez J Custom RG 1702 J Custom

it was hard parting with the strat, but it wasnt until i discovered the position #4(parallel wired neck HB) on Ibanez on distortion channel(before that i used it only on the clean channel) - and it sounds exactly like the song Cochise by Audioslave so the next day i shipped my strat to the new owner i didnt regret it since)

Re: NGD 2004 Prestige RG1550FM limited run!

Hey Steve, Congrats on the purchase. I've wanted that guitar a lot.

I had RG2550 gk. That guitar was tremendously heavy. I didn't weigh it exactly. I thought it might have been the thick paint. The other RGs I've played didn't weigh that close at all.

I must mention, the RG2550 I had came with the Edge Pro bridge. I don't know if that routing adds some weight or not.

Btw, I see that you're parting ways with your candy apple?!
