NGD 580B Ballback year??

Hello, I just came across this 580 Ballback, which I had never seen one in my life, so I got it at a very good price. I am happy with it, and its relatively hard to see. The serial number on the back plates reads 800895, could anyone tell me what year this guitar was made?

Is there any information regarding why there are so few or why did it not have any success at all?

I like it! Nice neck, has the edge trem and the IBZ/USA pickups, which do the job. The contoured back is fairly cool too.

I'd say it's a very early production 1988. Cool guitar.

The best thing about those is that they came with the original tremsetter thingy in them. Crack that back open, there may be $200 in there

Actually, those were nice guitars but Ibanez had a lot of equally nice guitars available when those were new, and nice guitars by Ibby were available used as well (the Prolines had just been discontinued). Not bad, but not everyone's cup of tea.

Re: NGD 580B Ballback year??

As mentioned above the 580 B and T models were introduced in '88 to be a high performance alternative to a standard Tele. They were great models with all the right parts.

As Jim said, they were great guitars that came out during a flood of other great guitars from manufacturers all over the globe. They just got "lost" in the mix. I don't know how much you paid, but again as stated above, that backstop will easily get you $200 back.......not a bad deal.

Hello, this is another one of the one thousand guitars the german distributorship ordered from Ibanez in 1988. I believe you have another one. The tale tale truth is the 8 starting the serial number. NOT 88 which some have. These were Limited edition guitars only made for the german distributor. Heres one of mine. I believe I showed you this before.

Re: NGD 580B Ballback year??

Nobody pays $200 for a Backstop. They just sit on eBay at that price. I paid $130 or something like that for mine and the guy had two and was willing to go lower if I'd take both.

About the 80XXXX serial numbers, I don't think there's quite the mystery to that people think there is. 1988 was a transitional year when they went away from the F7 headstock stickers but before they had the new headstock serial numbers. They probably started out with 80 because it follows the same format at the previous year and because they expected to make more than 9999 guitars.

I had a Ballback a few years ago - great guitar. I didn't play it enough so wound up trading it. I put Dimarzio 36th Anniv PAFs in it - sounded awesome.

Nice find! Congrats!
