Re: NGD: '89 540PSH-DY
The shadows are natural and were part of the pictures of the guitars. Basically, I took a picture of the background with no guitar there. Then, I zoomed it so that the magnification was the same I was using for the guitars. Then I cut out a 480x320 section of it and basically tiled it to make a 1920x1280 background. You have to flip the image a bunch of times to that all the edges line up, that's why the background appears to have a pattern to it.
Then I just took pictures of all the guitars individually against the same background. These are copied and pasted onto the background and each guitar is its own layer, so I can change any of them out without redoing the entire image.
The guitar images are on top of the background (obviously) and then I just erased away everything that isn't the guitar or the shadow. It just takes some careful use of the eraser tool to get good blending where the shadows are. I also had to make sure to take all the pictures in the same orientation so that the shadows are always going the same direction.
The shadows on the text is Photoshop, just the Drop Shadow function in the layer properties. Those are all their own layers as well, so I can do the picture with and without the text.
