NGD...The basket case RG750!!!

I bought this guitar on a whim when, truth be told, I probably couldn't afford it.........but the price was right and the seller was a good guy......thanks Chewy5150!!!

It's an early '88 750 VP (ser. 88203 that has TRULY been around the block. I suspect it's been dragged behind some child's wagon at some point in it's history.....lol.

I originally planned to do a minor restoration, but the condition of the body AND neck warrant a lot more work. I don't think I'll be able to preserve the color on it, so I decided to go full custom. I know...."YOUR GONNA KILL THE VALUE RYC!!" I'm OK with that. I have no plans to sell any of my 7xx's. Hopefully they'll go to the kids (or Treva..LOL) when I'm gone.

Anyway.........some "before" pics. I put the (almost finished) neck of my RG770 next to the 750's neck for comparison. The 770 neck WAS pretty rough, but not this bad.

A few pics of the necks and misc. stuff:

This Edge is as dirty as I've ever seen, but it's in good shape. It wont be going back on this guitar.

A black block???.... it's new to me.

That is in decent shape, the way you were talking I was expecting something that looked bad.

Only on jemsite does a nick mean you need a refinish!

Of course, that is a nasty looking crack on the headstock.

LOL....... I wish you could see it in person........ the nicks are the least of it. there aren't 2 sq. inches of this thing that are not DEEPLY dented, gouged or otherwise effed up. It just doesn't show up in the pics when you want it to, they only show up when you DON"T want people to see the flaws.

Someone in the past also tried to touch up a bunch of the nicks with the wrong color, then cleared over it.....badly I might add.

Yeah...there's actually 3 of them right together.......apparently it was torqued in ft/lbs not in/lbs.....lol. All I can do is fill them with CA and let it be as/is. there's also a couple of deep (3+mm) impacts on the neck that aren't going to clean up, but I can get them to look better.

Re: NGD...The basket case RG750!!!

I LOVE the feel (and don't mind the look) of those battered RGs. It makes me want to play them even more. Damned, those old RG7XX sharktooth necks are SO good!
I would just clean it and set it up. I don't care that much about resell value (I've noticed I usually sell modified Ibanez guitars more expensive than stock ones...)
That said, I've seen so many delicious customs RG here... :P

I also have a black block on my '89 540PSH Edge. I wonder why now.

You might laugh, but this is now my 4th 7xx wizard. I have this 750 ('88 ), a 760 ('91), my 770 ('93), and my USA custom ('90). They really are my favorite too........ the neck on my sons 565 (square heel 570 neck....'90 I think) feels completely different to me. I know they're supposed to be the same, but they really do feel different.

LOL.....I would, but I already have one.

Tomorrow starts the search for a color match. If I can't find it, I have a custom build in mind.

I was also looking at the Japanese catalog for '88 (the only one that shows the early 750's). It says the body is..............campwood???

In my life I've never heard of "campwood". It lists the 350 as being basswood and the 550 could have basswood OR campwood. Anybody have any ideas??

Re: NGD...The basket case RG750!!!

No idea about campwood.

Thea headstock looks to be more of a blow issue than a torque one from the pics.

You can steam out what you can on the neck, then just fill the divots with a thick CA, scrape level and buff out. You'll see it but not feel it.
