NGD Everything I ever wanted

OK. Saw this on CL back in the spring and wrote down the guys number but never called him. Been wanting a mahogany body guitar for a while now and have been looking at these for a while. My want list included mahogany, ebony, active pickups and V shape. Called the number to see if he still had it and YES, still for sale. It's a 2011 Dean VMNT Angel of Deth. Strings were buzzing by the nut and action was way high. Got it for 425 in mint condition with form fiited Dean case and original Dunlop straplocks (they are flush mounted in the body). After a board cleaning and oiling and a fret polish a set-up was in order. After adding some relief since it was almost in backbow, and lowering the bridge, it plays like butter. No more buzzing and action is nice and low. New battery for the Live Wires and this guitar screams. Never really a fan of EMGs but the active Live Wires have a really good clarity to them. Guitar is very light for mahogany. Just under 7 lbs. Has a smaller body shape though so I'm guessing that's where the weight went. The neck feels like it's in between a wizard and a wizard II. Not as thick feeling as my RG421 but not as thin as a wizard. Also has smaller frets like the 6105 on a JEM which I like a lot. Very comfy. Will put it through it's paces this afternoon at band practice. Can't wait to crank up the Legacy with this.

I think it is a cleared over wrap. But I do like it. The neck plays like my brother's old '84 Jackson RR1. Now I need to find a stand that works for a V.

Re: NGD Everything I ever wanted

Is there a bottomless stand, as used for a lot of long scale basses, a good option for your V?

Very nice guitar (I have that same Mustaine model on my Galdan "Playin' Guitar" t-shirt), and is it high output like an EMG active pickup or more of a traditional PAF sound?

Great guitar...

What are the pros and cons?

Been interested in a Dean for a while, maybe one of the MAB 7s, just wondered how they compared with Ibbys and what levels they compared with.

Re: NGD Everything I ever wanted

It is a great guitar. Plays very nice. I thought the painted neck would bother me but not an issue. The neck is about the same thickness as a Wizard II but not as fat feeling on the back sides. Thicker in the middle but thinner on the edges. Dean describes it as a D shape. Frets are tall and skinny like the 6105s on a JEM and the ebony board is nice and smooth. It is rather light for mahogany. May be chambered like a Les Paul but don't know for sure. The Live Wire pickups are awesome. Never a fan of EMGs but these have good clarity but tons of gain for low string squeals ala Zack Wylde. It is a very metal sounding guitar. Not suited well for your 70's rock. The only thing I would change on it is to add an Edge trem. They do make a Floyd model but not an OFR. The case is very large for it but has a soft pleather padded handle. Great bang for your buck and easy to set-up and adjust.

Re: NGD Everything I ever wanted

I bought that exact stand. Works great but not sure how the guitar will take it. Really don't like hanging my Ibanez guitars on it since all the weight of the guitar is hanging by the neck. Do you think there will be any scarf joint problems from the weight on the neck?

Are you kidding? A scarf joint is very strong and possibly stronger than a one piece like a Gibson neck (known for breakage). You are just hanging the guitar which is only holding the weight of the guitar and maybe a strap.
