NGD: Ibanez 442r

You might remember this from the evilbay auction.

I bought it in May but had to wait till now to get to the states and bring it back to europe.

Here for the pics: https://www.flickr.com/photos/653060...7646314072458/

I'll show you how I took it with me on the plane later, you'll laugh your ass off

Re: NGD: Ibanez 442r

Very cool! I've recently become obsessed with finding a 542R because I'd love to have a SSS guitar.

I've got some major Ibanez NECK envy going on right here! Love those old 22-fret maple fb necks

Re: NGD: Ibanez 442r

That's a very beautiful guitar and less hassle with non-locking trem. Nice maple neck, too.

this is really the only maple Ultra neck i've seen going on ebay for a decent price in the past 5 years. Plays like butter

and yes, this will probably follow me in the grave

Very good score. I love these 442R and yours looks super clean.

Like we discussed in another thread awhile back, I think that "officially" these are Viper necks. Regardless, it doesn't matter what we call it, they play great. "Viper" seemed like a catch-all name that Ibanez used for anything remotely strat-like that wasn't particularly flat like an Ultra.

Would that be similar to a Wizard neck but with slightly more radius like maybe a roundish 9.5" inch Fender measurement?

Re: NGD: Ibanez 442r

Wizards were 43mm at the nut and, in the early ones, a mere 17mm thick at fret 1. Vipers and Ultras were both 42mm width and 19-19.5 thick, so thicker and less narrow. Original Wizard and Ultra were supposed to both be 14" radius, and the Viper was 12", so somewhat more strat-like, but not quite as rounded.

As noted in other threads, I've found a LOT of difference across the Viper spectrum but they all feel swell.

Yes, indeed I was expecting a Viper neck (straight headstock should indicate that), but I A/B tested this neck with 440r Ultra and RT650 Viper necks and it feels more like an Ultra, but slightly slimmer. It is a relief for me as I like ultra better than Viper ones. Sounds weird but the neck I like the most is my 1995 JS100 one (the cheapest js, made in korea), probably bc i grew up on that one.

Nevertheless, this is an interesting neck, also very hard to find. I was surprised to be the only one on this guitar when it came on ebay, I called up the seller and made a deal over the phone (from Amsterdam!), and he said he didn't have many interested parties. Good for me
