Talking NGD! Ibanez RG3550MZ GK (now with photos!)

Just purchased a used Ibanez RG 3550MZ in Galaxy Black from the local Long and McQuade (after waiting 2 months for an S5470F RVK that the North American distributor never got...). Great guitar!

Body: RG (basswood)
Fretboard: 24 frets, maple
Neck: 3 pieces of maple, 2 pieces of walnut
Bridge: Edge Zero with ZPS3

Neck humbucker: DiMarzio Air Norton
Middle single coil: DiMarzio True Velvet
Bridge humbucker: Dimarzio Tone Zone

Coming from playing an Epiphone SG for a few years, the neck feels very thin and fast. The guitar plays really well, and sounds surprisingly good. I was worried that this guitar might only sound good distorted, but am very happy to be wrong there. The neck pickup sounds warm and full with a clean tone, and the bridge pickups sound great under distortion. I haven't used the single coil too much so far, but I'm sure I'll need that single coil sound soon. As a single coil, it is noticeably quieter than the humbuckers.

I really like the aggressive stylings on the guitar , and the faux-metal pickguard on the galaxy black paint. I didn't think I'd like the zebra pattern pickups, but they definitely fit well, mostly with the white binding (though newer RG3550's don't have the binding, I have the 2009 version)

Guitar still needs a good setup, which is what I get for not buying from Ibanez Rules . I got a very good price for the guitar, since it's used. Too bad the previous owner dropped the guitar, there's some paint chipping along the bottom edge (not really visible from the front or the back though), and what looks like a very thin hairline crack in the neck pocket. Hopefully this isn't anything to worry about.

PS: Huge coincidence that mindriot01 just made a thread for his RG3550. Kind of surprising since this guitar isn't one of the more popular ones.

Hahah, same for you. Way to steal my thunder though

This is going to take some time to get used to, going from stopbar + Tune-O-Matic to a floating tremolo. I have to watch out a bit more now that bending one string affects the pitch of the others etc etc. But the whammy bar is fun!

Oh I'm sure you'll have fun getting use to it! And yes, the whammy can be loads of fun but,it can also be used very creatively. Think Jeff Beck for instance....

He's a great example to me of "how to use" a bar creatively. Even if his style of music isn't your cup of tea, there's alot to be learned from him than just your basic dive bomb whammy tricks (which of course, are a blast as well!!) ..

Congrats on the guitar man, looks tastey..........

You can set up the EZ bridge so that you can bend normally...I have a 2550z with the same bridge and I set mine as per the manual and I can bend without the other strings going flat - it's not 100% like a hard tail but it's pretty darn close...that is the beauty of the EZ bridge!

congrats on your beautiful new acquisition!
