NGD: J Custom RG8470F FE

Been hunting down J Customs the last few weeks and finally managed to score an absolute mint 2006 RG8470FFE today. This is my first J Custom after owning a string of Prestige and RG550's, and I have to say the quality has exceeded my expectations. It also looks like it has been set up by a very good luthier considering the way the frets have been leveled/dressed and the fret ends rounded.

Very rarely do I come across a piece of gear that inspires me to play better... this is one of those times and I feel lucky to have scored this J Custom and a couple months ago, a sweet '87 RG550.

And here's my latest '87 RG550, supposed to be an RF so maybe the colour faded over time:

You do know that the J's come stock with the fret ends rounded, correct?

Love the 550 but that J Custom is something else, gorgeous axe!! Congratz on 2 great guitars!!!

Edit: That's a D Sonic in the bridge on the JCRG as well surely?

The '06/'07 RG8470Fs were the last of the non-EZ Ibanez 6-string J Customs. Keep it in honor. Congrats! But what happened to the original case?

Did not know that, I wonder why Ibanez does not do this for other high end guitars.

The owner said he wanted a more modern sound. The Tone Zone has been my pickup of choice but I hear they're a little muddy in mahogany. Any comments on that?

Yeah, this one is going nowhere! Owner wanted to keep the original case and I wanted a JC badly enough to say "sure, keep the case mate!".

Re: NGD: J Custom RG8470F FE

On the Tone Zone thing: Well I have Tone Zone's in 2 of my J Customs and I wouldn't say that the the sound is muddy on the mahogany bodied JCRG, I think it gives a darker sound yeah but not 'muddy'. All depends what you're running it through of course. Having said that the Tone Zone in the Alder body JCRG is definitely a lot brighter in sound.

I have the same JCustom that I bought from Rich. Just an awesome, neck plays like butter guitar.

Re: NGD: J Custom RG8470F FE

When I spoke with the Ibanez tech at Kurosawa in Tokyo about the 2009 J Customs with EMGs and Seymour Duncans, and he simply said "a J Custom is only complete with a ToneZone pickup" . The ToneZone is muddy if your rig's settings make it sound muddy. It's definitely dark, but all a matter of dialing the amp settings correctly.

That's what my 8470F FE does for me, too. As Jack's, I got mine from Rich, and from the moment I opened the case the first time, it's been captivating.

NICE!!! There's something about those vine inlays! They're both beautiful! Post some clips when you get a chance, would love to hear them!

Well, I've never had trouble with Tone Zones or Air Nortons in basswood bodies through my setup but based on what I'm reading I think it might work out for me. Alternatively, I may try the Air Zone + Classic.

Re: NGD: J Custom RG8470F FE

Snap !! I have one exactly the same. Beautiful guitar ! The Tone Zone is NOT muddy, it has a good bottom end and low mids but plenty of bite, and in a guitar with a maple cap and maple neck it sounds great ! Careful with the gain though, I find it more pokey than the D Sonic. Not all JC's come in JC cases, two of mine are in the Prestige case, which were par for the course when buying from the UK. You could buy a Prestige case pretty cheap I'm sure if it was an issue.

Ibanez cases out of stock until mid January, so the JC is sitting in a spare RG20th case.

Re: NGD: J Custom RG8470F FE

If you'd like an original J Custom case I think a guy on evilbay called 'meestursparkle' can get them, I'm sure I heard that somewhere. You'd have to import it from Japan though as that's where he is located.

We should have an 8470F FE picture thread, to get an idea of how the whole '06/'07 family looks like.
