NGD... Kind of

A little over a year ago I bought this white 61 RI with the intention of converting (well having it converted) it to an SG Custom. Here's the before

And after 11 months I finally got it back today

Definitely not a cheap project, but I always wanted a 2 pickup SG custom. I replaced the pickups with WCR Fillmores and the Tune-o-matic and stop bar are Tone Pros, the stop bar is light aluminum.
It was a pretty big project, had to wait to get the fretboard from Gibson, take the old one off, install and fret the new one, re do the binding, apply the headstock overlay and the some refinish work had to be done afterward.

I'm not so sure I like the tuners I went with and I'm still on the fence about if I want a w/b/w pickguard, but I am leaning towards getting one made

Damn Cid, that looks good and I'm not even a fan of Gibsons! Who did the work? Can you post closeups of the binding on the headstock and neck?

Re: NGD... Kind of

Took it to Third Coast in Chicago. They do awesome work, but they do seem to miss their estimated time

I would leave it as is Cid...

PS what tuners are on there? I might be interested if you go a different route.

Why not get the 3 pup version and modify the electronics? Gotta say this is an odd project.

Re: NGD... Kind of

Do you mean it took them 11 months to complete the work?

Re: NGD... Kind of

Yeah, I know it took Gibson forever to send out the fretboard. The original quote was 6 months

Re: NGD... Kind of

Ouch!

Looks good though! I would have gone for 2 pups myself, and white guard.

Re: NGD... Kind of

finding the white pick guard is easy, finding the part that goes between the neck pick up and the neck is the hard part

That looks hot! Not a small project, for sure. But it turned out really nice.

Question is, how do YOU like it?

Re: NGD... Kind of

It looks, plays and sounds awesome. For what ever it mean to anyone I would put it on par with anything from Gibson's Custom Shop, but maybe I'm crazy but the neck doesnt look or feel like a 61 RI neck. It feels thicker, but there's no way they replaced the neck, I know what a new neck costs from Gibson and I didnt pay that. I need to get my hands on another 61 RI and A/B them. Im probably crazy.

Re: NGD... Kind of

I'm shocked you paid Gibbys price for a board honestly. And that you could get a slab of ebony from them..

Re: NGD... Kind of

From what they said, it would've been cheaper to get the board from Gibson then to have the shop get a board and do the inlays. The cost of the board, nut, strings, fretwire, binding, screws, and paint (the parts I didn't supply) was $110.
