NGD: METAL IS FOREVER!

The Metal Leopard is home, got this today and itīs in very good condition. No chips and dings, has been in a closet the last ten years according to former owner who bought this baby back in 1990.
Only sad thing, it has no original pickup, I think itīs a duncan or something. I also have some questions since I don't know anything about this guitar. Wich original humbucker did this guitar have? When was it made? This finish seems to be a part of the metaldesign series, is this correct?
Please tell me all you know about this guitar. The monster is in need of a good cleaning but other than that, it's an amazing guitar.

Re: NGD: METAL IS FOREVER!

Great looks! One pickup is enough with that graphic. AFAIK the design is a part of the metal design series. The original pickup could be many things, they were selected by the buyer (from a small selection if F pickups). I'm sure someone can verify or correct this, as I'm not 100% sure.

The humbucker seems to be a Seymour Duncan Parallel Axis Trembucker - http://www.seymourduncan.com/product...atb1_parallel/ Originally a Blues Saraceno signature pickup. Most likely not worth changing unless you don't like it, of course.

Re: NGD: METAL IS FOREVER!

Great guitar, and don't worry about the non-original pickup. We're talking Ibanez, not Gibson. If you found one these days with the original pickup still in the guitar, I'd be surprised as more players switch them than not.

Peace

Mike

Re: NGD: METAL IS FOREVER!

In '90, the customer could choose from the IBZusa F1,F2,F3, or F4 but they could also choose any stock DiMarzio hum.

Mine came with a Mega-Drive in the bridge and a PAF Pro in the neck.

Re: NGD: METAL IS FOREVER!

Here is an order form scan from Ibanezrules:

Looks like you could order an F1, F2, F3, F3 Triple, F4 (although usually specified for neck) and DiMarzio PAF Pro, Super Distortion, Double Whammy, X2N and Mega Drive.

Re: NGD: METAL IS FOREVER!

metal leopard is in my buying list. great you have one!! especially with single humbucker configuration? it's totally a killer.

If the pickup is PATB2B ( Parallel Axis Trem Distortion), I suggest you to keep it.
You can't never go wrong with this pickup.

How do I find out if the pickup is a PATB2B?

The neckplate says 893345 wich I believe would date this guitar to 1989? It also have a number on a sticker on backside of the headstock. There is also a sticker(same number) on the backside of the body in the tremolo cavity.

you must pull out the pickup first and see at the bottom plate of the pickup, if there is any sticker/label/marking indicated it's PATB2B.
all seymour duncan pickups usually have label on the bottom plate of the pickups. If it's gone... then you'll have to guessing what kind of pickup you got there.

but from the physical look, it's surely from parallel axis trembucker family. the only question is, what kind of parallel axis?
there are 3 models : original, blues saraceno, and distortion.
