NGD! NGD! - 1992 RT650GFTB

Hey all, I scored this guitar on evilBay last week and wanted to share. It just showed up today, and (aside from dirt and grime) I'm really impressed with its condition.

For those of you looking and going, "What the heck kind of Ibanez is THAT?!?", here are the stats:

1992 RT650 Gravure Flame Transparent Blue
Solid alder body with foto-flame top & binding
Viper neck profile w/binding
V7/S2/V8 pickups with split-5 wiring and push/pull coil tap
Gotoh Magnum locking tuners.

Ibanez's idea was to create a guitar for the vintage market with a familiar feel, yet modern appointments. They succeeded, this guitar's neck profile is very much like a 50's strat, yet the fingerboard has a 12" radius. It's got a full on strat heel too. These were made in 1992 and 1993. They're kinda scarce, not rare, but still undervalued in the market.

Re: NGD! NGD! - 1992 RT650GFTB

Thanks guys. I actually owned one of these about 10 years ago and have regretted selling it ever since. So, I knew what I was getting but what I didn't know was that I was getting it in such great condition. Came with the OHSC, all the wrenches, the original trem bar, and the warranty card and owner's manual. There's just a little pick scratching on the finish and one 1/8" chip out of the back edge by the strap button. Definitely a score.

I put a fresh set of strings on it, and lowered the action a little. It plays amazingly now. However, I do think a pickup upgrade is in the near future, because I've never been a huge fan of the v7/v8 pickups.

Nice guitar, congratulations!

I wish Ibanez would come up with some more Alder guitars. An alder RG with a maple fretboard would be a dream come true.

I'm over all the basswood ones, and as such I'm going for a different brand guitar, or custom. Not sure which yet.

If Ibanez were to pull their finger out and release something other than the white Jem in alder I'd definitely be picking one up - as long as it wasn't ridiculously priced.

Re: NGD! NGD! - 1992 RT650GFTB

Awesome score. I picked up a RT450 last year for $120 CDN, with a swapped out pickguard (it originally came with a tortoise guard, and this one has a white one), but no trem bar. I've been looking to try to land one of these, but have had no luck. In fact, the closest I came (without resorting to the Bay) was a 650 that was sanded down and painted bubble gum pink (amateur paint job no less).

Enjoy, enjoy!

Neat. Happy NGD mate. I (surprisingly) like these a lot more than trad strats

Re: NGD! NGD! - 1992 RT650GFTB

lol. i think you outbid me on that one (i didn't want to go over $300), but i'm glad it found a home where it could really be appreciated. i dig the 650s, especially for the way they look, but i like the 450s more for how they play. i've read time and time again that the viper neck is the same on the 150s, 450s and 650s, but there's something about that bound neck that feels way different than the unbound neck on the 450s and 650s. seems like the fretboard radius is flatter. which is why i've had 3 650s and they always end up getting sold or given away. but i'm always drawn back to them for their classy looks. enjoy

Re: NGD! NGD! - 1992 RT650GFTB

Likely. I put in a ridiculous bid because I wanted it pretty badly. I'm glad I did, this one is in *choice* condish.

I told my girlfriend that I've been on the hunt for the perfect Strat for years and the reason I keep not finding one is because they weren't RT650s. Lol. I've never played the unbound neck on the 450, but then I'm a sucker for binding.
