Question NGD!!! Not sure what I've got. Help me ID this unusual RG

Here's my New Guitar Day RG story...

I bought what was described as a 1999 RG570 made in Japan.
I was told I am the 3rd owner of this guitar and the seller does not know a lot about its history.
I can't positively ID this guitar.

So here's the problem...
The serial number on the neck and the markings inside the neck cavity on the body do not match.
I think I may have a mut and not a pure breed.

The neck is stamped with RG550 on its heal and the serial number on the back of the head starts with F99.
That tells us the neck is from Japan and was made in 1999. That's just the neck though.

The body's neck cavity has some markings.
The markings are hard to read but it looks like it says 470AH...I could be wrong though.

Another clue is that the neck and body fit together like they were meant for each other, but the heal of the neck sticks out from the cavity some.
This doesn't affect play-ability it just looks odd.
Makes me think the neck and the body do not match.

Bridge is an Edge bridge.
The pickups are DiMarzio.

Bridge: Fred DP153
Middle: YJM DP217
Neck: PAF Joe DP213

I recently changed the volume and tone knobs to black Fender stock knobs.
The original knobs were the black cosmo that match the hardware.

I've searched the Ibanez catalogs and the Ibanez wiki to find a match, but all I can find is something close but no cigar.
I just need to ID the body of the guitar since the ID of the neck is obvious.

Any help from you all is appreciated.

Here are 18 pics of the RG to assist in the search.

You have a very fortunate find there. First off, the neck and body are original mates. The neck is a '99 Wizard II which is indicated by the "#2" on the stamp. There was an entire series of MIJ 4xx's that came with the OE bridge and V7-S1-V8 setup. Ive never seen one with the flame top and binding like yours, but I'm not surprised by seeing it. Ibanez is well known for putting out really cool guitars that never make it into a catalog.

FWIW.... the body is definitely in the RG470 category. I'm sure Ibanez had a slightly different designation for it, but it is a 470 and not a 570.

Well, the trem has been upgraded to an Edge from a Lo-TRS, which you can tell from the bigger size of the route for the latter. The trem posts are original though - bigger heads than Edge/Lo Pro ones and without locking studs.

I wonder if the body is MIK because the neck screw placement for AANJ differs to MIJ, as has been pointed out on these forums in the past, idk, as old 470s were always MIJ...

The very first 470s came with an Edge, but that changed to a Lo TRS not long after.

Your correct, but sometime around 2000 the 4xx guitars were also being produced at Fujigen. These came with an Edge Pro from 2003 on. I know I've also seen edge equipped 4xx's from the same time period, but can't find any evidence to show you that.

I do agree that this guitar was probably TRS equipped originally after looking at the route better. There was an RG470FM in '93 that I've found in several colors....none of them being purple. I also can't find any evidence as to the type of neck joint on the '93 FM's.

The input jack socket confirms it's from 4XX series.
As EDGE on RG4XX ? not a strange thing, I had RGR480 with Edge.

The body comes from a '94 made in Korea RG470FMTP.
Usually you can find this guitar in blue, green or red. Your one finish is not so common.

Awesome responses! Big thanks! I think together we figured this mystery out.

The body really looks like the RG470FMTK in the picture in this catalog page.
http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/...t_id=207&now=6

The color in person really depends on the light cast on the guitar. In daylight it looks more black. Inside, sometimes it looks purple and sometimes it looks more like the color of rootbeer. That's kind of cool that the colors vary so much according to the casting light. This is why I think it is the TK color rather than the TP color. The color chart from the '94 catalog confirms that.
http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/..._id=207&now=30

I never even thought that it could have been the RG470FMTK because of the maple fretboard in the catalog pic.

Another part of the mystery solved, the extra (fifth) hole in the 550 neck heel doesn't look factory drilled.
That and the flat part of the heel sticks out a bit makes me think that the neck is a replacement neck for the original maple fretboard neck.

If it really is originally a RG470FMTK, then this guitar had several big mods.
1) From original neck to the rosewood 550 #2
2) From original Lo TRS to Edge bridge
3) From original pickups to DiMarzios

Nice upgrades!

I think she's a keeper. Pretty with some pretty cool mods.

I'm about to send her to my luthier for a setup and to install a Sustainer 401 pickup kit into her. Talk about a modded guitar now...yep, she's a mut, but she's mine.

Big thanks to all here who helped me figure this RG out.

The neck may very well have been stock. The same stamp was used for both the 5xx series and the 4xx series when they where made in Japan.
