NGD RG550 RFR or FA?

Found this Saturday night after dinner with the family. Hanging on the wall at GC for the price of a used GIO and marked as an Ibanez RG Candy Apple. Included was a TKL Freedom hard case. Had to wait til today to pick it up due to police hold for 5 days. Anyway, not sure if it's a very late 550 road flare red or very early 550 five alarm red. It has a black headstock which started in '89 but is had a stickered serial number. You can see the light rectangle on the back of the headstock where the sticker used to be. I thought those were only '87-'88. Definately players condition with some edge chipping and dirty board. Has some fretwear with divots on the 1st fret and a small neck joint crack only on the bass side. Haven't cleaned it yet but did some disassembly to check stamps and wiring. It hasn't been apart since it was built! Stamps look good and has the original neck shim. Bunch of grunge under the edges of the pickguard but the wiring is factory. Untouched with a VLX53 switch. It plays very well with no buzzing. Not a big fan of maple necks so I probably won't keep it but still cool to find one untouched besides play wear. Is this a Road Flare Red or a Five Alarm Red? Any thoughts?

Re: NGD RG550 RFR or FA?

Wow nice score. Can't believe I missed it...lol. Its not RFR so I guess that would make it FA. Although I do think there was one more red color that was a deep red like that. I had a 750 in it once, can't remember the name though.

Duh...the other color was CA Candy Apple...so that is what I would think it actually is. I guess GC got the color correct at least.

Dude BEAUTIFUL guitar. Happy NGD!

I would keep it man. Five alarm reds dont pop up very often and if you do some minor work to it, it'll be good as new visually

I'd keep her. it looks like candy apple red (appears to be the same color as my 560, (which I also scored from a GC)

I think it could be an 87-88. Most of those have black head stocks, not all, some are colored. Also the pickups don't have the V1 v2 markings printed on the front which was the case for the early RG550s... I think they started that in '90.
Nice score.

I'd take a pm if you decide to sell her.

Re: NGD RG550 RFR or FA?

Taking a break from cleaning it up. I'm sure it is not candy apple. I have a candy apple red RG750 and it is much deeper and darker. I'm almost sure it is very early '89 Five Alarm Red. It has the black headstock that started on maple boarded 550s in '89 but it does have the stickered serial and black trem block which were from the earlier ones. In the house it has a more orange tinge to it ala FA. So far board is cleaned but didn't sand the dark spots just cleaned the gunk off. Frets are polished. Back of the neck is sanded and 1st coat of tung oil is applied. Set-up was pretty good to start with, so only needed a small truss adjustment and level out the trem. Plays like a 550 should with nice low action and no buzzing even with the fretwear. Only gripe is the maple board. They always sound shrilly and bright to me. Much preferred are rosewood and favorite ebony. Back to cleaning and a new set of D'addarios.

Re: NGD RG550 RFR or FA?

Its a great find no matter what color! Does it have any metallics in the color? RFR and FA have no metallics, CA would have metallics. They had black headstocks in 87 also.

Yep, black headstocks go back to '87.

love the golden age 550's!!! the maple neck looks right - I wouldn't change it - but if it's a player then I guess you want it to suit your preferences. great score - congrats man!!!

Re: NGD RG550 RFR or FA?

Nice guitar, congrats on your purchase. I really don't think its FA red...FA would be a lot more orange looking. I have a 1991 CA rg550 and it's closer, but darker than your picture so i don't think it's that either. My guess is coral mist, which was offered in 1990. The black headstock may mean it was an early 1990 made in 1989 and they went with the black headstock??

Re: NGD RG550 RFR or FA?

I'm almost positive it's an early '89 FA. Not loud enough to be RFR and there is no metallic in the paint and not dark enough for CA. From what I can tell, only the DY and RFR had color matched headstocks. In '89 they all went to black headstocks and add Atlantic Blue, Five Alarm Red, Heather Pearl. I think it is an early FA since it has the stickered headstock from '88. Not sure about the 5-way switch. When did the VLX53 switch start? That was stock in my '92 750 but don't know when they started using it. I'm assuming '89 since that is when the 700 series began. Which brings me back to this being an early '89 FA.

Necro bump - CPU is back up and running... Don't think it is FA. Five Alarm is almost neon orange:

Sweet axe and nice score!

Re: NGD RG550 RFR or FA?

Mike's 550 is definately FA.
I've got the same, with black headstock and it's an '89. (Great guitar!).

It looks indeed to me as you have scored a nice CA, and that's a lovely colour!!!
