NGD RG550 with some mystery and some questions

So I picked up this on the local craigslist. Had to buy it quickly since it was at a good price and I didn't want to miss out. So here's the mysterious part, or maybe obvious part, neck has serial number from 87 and is marked rg550 that's simple. Now the body is white which should of had a maple neck in 87 but the neck is rosewood. So I take the guitar apart for further inspection and the neck pocket has 550 in it. Now here's my question? Could the factory have sent this out in this particular combination? The neck and body pocket have some matching pink colors along the edges( see pics) and it did not appear to me to have ever been apart. I've seen some RFR 550's from 87 with rosewood on the old internet. Either way I cleaned the body, frets and oiled the fretboard and it came out very nice in my opinion. Has an aftermarket knob and a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge but those seem like the only mods. (Seller included the original V8 bridge pickup also. The frets are in great shape, the Edge trem has some palm wear but works flawlessly. Any comments or input would be great. Thx. Came with a pretty decent plastic case also. The body has faded to an off white which tells me that it has some age. I took a side by side pic with my 03 7VWH for comparison.

Probably a parts guitar. Neck could be original to the body. Rosewood necks were standard on black guitars in 1987, but there's no reason to believe that some white ones weren't made with rosewood necks.

Pickguard is correct for an '87 but the pickups are all wrong. The middle and neck pickups are from a 90's guitar.

Can't tell what finish is on that trem but it doesn't look like an '87. Fine tuners are wrong.

There are a pair RG550's on Craiglist's here in NH, just not sure if they are a good price.

Re: NGD RG550 with some mystery and some questions

I'm not an expert on the older 550's... but maybe the neck was originally in a pink guitar and was put in a newer white body from the 90's? That would explain the pink marks that would have rubbed off the neck and ended up on the white body.

Either way... very nice guitar! Congrats on a good buy!

Re: NGD RG550 with some mystery and some questions

Hadn't noticed the paint on the neck before. The neck is probably from an RG560 in Lipstick Red. The markings on the necks don't necessarily mean that the neck belongs to that model. Any guitar that would use a common neck often has a common stamp.

The body I'm pretty confident is from an '87-89 guitar. I say this because the pickguard is consistent with that year and the screw holes don't line up well with later bodies. So I think that the body and guard belong together.

Given all the different parts from obviously different sources, I think that there's a good chance that this is a parts guitar. Either that or someone took an early 550 and 560 and swapped necks to make a maple neck 560, then changed some of the other parts down the road.

Thanks for all the input. I was hoping for more originality but for 200.00 I guess I'll be content with a well playing Frankenstein version.

Re: NGD RG550 with some mystery and some questions

Tuners look original for an '87. The hardware should be black like the tuners, but it looks like this has a newer Cosmo Edge and a chrome nut.
The pickups look like my 1990.
Don't know the price you got it, but even if it is not all original, the parts are correct and not cheaper ones. If it plays as good as my 1990, I am sure you'll enjoy it!!!
