Noisy J Customs need some advice

Hi all

Got me a set of Rg Paints 1 and 2. Recently plugged both in for a play and they sound awesome.

BUT

I noticed that when selecting between pickups without playing anything I can hear a real difference in background noise especially in the center pickup which is apparently a Jem PUP.

Also I hear crackles on one of the guitars when turning the VOl knob. I assume this needs to be replaced, anyone know which exact type of pot i need, and what schematics I need, to do my own wiring soldering. etc...

I just dont trust my precious J customs with a guitar guy, having had a bad expeirence in the past having my guitar come back with a big dint in it.

i just dont want to trust anyone with these awesome paint jobs..

Any help would be great....

Julien

What type of noise is it?

You canít be afraid of all techguys because one has done something wrong.

Re: Noisy J Customs need some advice

Its the kind of noise like background noise kinda like radio sound... hard to really describe, only happens with distortion but it can be heard in clean up loud...

I am using a mesa boogie nomad 100 just been serviced, happens identical on both guitars...

My thoughts may be cause I am sitting in front of the amp and the power board its plugged into has other appliances also plugged in..

Apart from that they sound amazing when im playing....

Nope I refuse tech guys for guitars... unless I really need one for world tours, which arnt on the cards, as far as I can tell :P Id prefer to do it myself and enjoy the learning process...

Can someone tell me besides the fact that these guitars are prototypes J customs, in essence what model Ibanez are these, and what would be the closest I could find to a wiring diagram for them.. and what type of replacement vol pots I need for this type of guitar...

Thanks again

Re: Noisy J Customs need some advice

Not too familiar with HSH guitars?

It's a single coil, expect it to have 10 times the ambient noise of a humbucker, and 5 times on 2 and 4 in split.

The guitars are not proto anything, they're straight production. You do not need a wiring diagram, you're looking at it when you take the cover off.

Nothing I ever bought from Hong Seng had clean pots. 10 years of humidity and electronics don't mix. Turn the volume knob, 100 times if it takes it, it'll clean up a little each time. If it doesn't, next step is pot cleaner, spray and spin. If that doesn't work, put a soldering iron on the pot and heat it up, spin to try and clear it. Last resort replace with the same pots you have, or modify with aftermarket at your choice.
