Non-mahogany J Customs?

I'm trying to pin down exactly what J Customs are not made of mahogany. I know there's one that was made alder, like the RG8320bbk Rich has on his used page. Was there or is there one made from basswood? Mahogany is probably the biggest thing that keeps me from wanting a J Custom. Mahogany can be a beautiful tone wood, but it just isn't something I'd want on an RG.

Re: Non-mahogany J Customs?

I think one of my ex-babies was a basswood body:

Still very heavy because of the METAL finish. The ART is alder and I think the GEAR is basswood. Correct me if im wrong....

METAL - Painted finish, no metal, but basswood.

ART - Maple capped basswood

GEAR - Mahogany

That Lemon Yellow I just sold was ash.

Re: Non-mahogany J Customs?

Thanks Rich! I was familiar with the Art and Gear, but not what wood the body was. Never seen a metal one, looks awesome.

So, what would you call the J Customs that are being made now? They all seem to be mahogany + flame maple. I realize that these are custom shop guitars, so I would guess that there isn't as much rhyme or reason to what is made like there is with a production guitar. They're not standard models -- more like works of art! If you don't hunt down a particular one, do you just wait and see what they make and snag it if it looks good? Like the "soup of the day"?

Re: Non-mahogany J Customs?

They're flat out stuck with mahogany. Very few will ever be anything else. The "custom" store runs will probably have more wood options than anything the JCS will do, that's just the way they think. If it aint broke....

So J Custom basically means mahogany for the foreseeable future? Ah well, looks like whenever I can actually buy one, I'll have a bit of a treasure hunt on my hands.

Re: Non-mahogany J Customs?

With rare exception it's always meant mahogany, not that there aren't several ie. solid flame maple, etc types of all the models they've made. But predominent new builds will be mahogany.

Re: Non-mahogany J Customs?

I'll conceded I've never had one, and they may have been done the same as the S Giger's where they were blasted and then metalized. I was always under the impression they were the same as the 90ths though and the "Metal" was a nod to the Rock genre and not to materials used.
