Oak RG project

Hey, just started building my oak rg, thought id share the progress.
Basically i got some free oak from work and thought why not make a guitar, i know its not the best wood for the job but why not try it anyway?

Firstly heres the final design im going for, not sure on the finish yet so ive left it white for now,

Pickup is a dimarzio super distortion, neck is from a lefty 550 but using it right handed, gotoh fixed bridge. As you can see the idea was to keep it simple haha.

Heres the progress so far,

The oak chipped quite severely during routing but as its being painted i can fill.

Hopefully going to get the bridge on and humbucker routed tomorrow.

Just a question about the clear coat, would this spray be ok?

Also what colour do you guys think i should go for?

Be good to hear what you think,

Pete

Re: Oak RG project

Very interesting build.

IMO I'd stay away from the white, rarely have I seen a good white paint on a guitar (the exception was a G&L Legacy)

Maybe even a red/vintage burst if you pull it off

Re: Oak RG project

Yea i wouldnt have white, just couldnt decide a colour haha. Hmm not sure about a burst, would be nice but ive never sprayed a guitar before so best start out simple i think.

Was thinking about this colour

Also what finish do i give the neck pocket? Im going to seal the oak with aluminium wood primer then white primer, should i give it 1 coat of aluminium primer an leave it at that?

Cheers

When I don't know what color I feel like repainting a project guitar, I go to autozone and look at the automotive colors; I always feel instantly inspired! I ended up using 4 different colors of blue for my last burst!

Re: Oak RG project

Yea il go take a look at some automotive colours, wow cool would be nice to see your 4 colour burst!

Its pretty heavy, not as heavy as i was expecting, still got to do the contours and cavitys so should get lighter.

Quick question, im positioning the bridge at the moment, i know it has to be 12.75 inches from the middle of the 12th fret, but which part of the bridge do i measure to? On the gotoh fixed bridge is it to the hole where the strings go through the body?

thanks

EDIT: Just found this calculator for the gotoh fixed bridge

http://www.stewmac.com/FretCalculator

Does this look correct?

Re: Oak RG project

Looks good, now personally I would leave it natural, like this:

Would love to hear some sound clips to see what oak is like.

As far as I know the scale length is the distance between the nut and the point hte strings cross the bridge. On my tunamatic that is the same as the bridge posts. Don't know about the Gotoh though.
